Hi Brandi- Sorry I didn't respond sooner- I didn't realize anyone else joined the group.
I hope things are calm in your life at the moment. Mine are generally roller coasterish, but we have been doing a lot of talking and trying to take part in stress reducing activities that calm everyone's moods...
Nice to meet you.

*hugs* my hubby recently went back to the dr regarding depression too. It is tough on any relationship. He doesn't want to be on meds, but at times he just zones in front of the TV and I can't help him.

Hi, I'm new here and it sure is nice to find somewhere to discuss my husbands illnesses.  He was diagnosed about 9 months ago with bipolar disorder, he also has ADHD.  The bipolar diagnosis was totally new to us, he was diagnosed with ADHD as a child.  I found myself extremely frustrated after educating myself a little on the disorder with my in laws, b/c it became very clear to me that my DH had been suffering from this disorder probably since childhood as well.  His parents never kept him on meds for ADHD and never followed up with psychiatric appts.  My DH has suffered a lot for his very bad choices-he turned to drugs in jr high and after high school wound up in jail, while in jail he ended up in a lot more trouble b/c of his temper flare-ups, and so on and so forth.  I just can't help but think that had he been diagnosed properly as a kid his life may have had a totaly different outcome.
Since being on medication he has much better control of his moods and temper, although he was never ever physically violent with me he'd certainly look for fights elsewhere which was quite alarming at times.  He still drinks too much, I think and he's struggled on and off with drug addiction.  I long for the day he finally HEARS me and quits drinking altogether.

We have a beautiful daughter together who'll be two in May and I'm terrified of the apparent genetic predisposition for mental illness passing on to her.  At the moment she is probably one of the happiest toddlers I've ever encountered and very good natured.  My mother in law is also mentally ill, although I'm not sure her diagnosis- she actually had to undergo the shock therapy on a couple of occasions and is on several different medications, she unlike my DH seems down and depressed all the time, whereas with him it's like being on the craziest damn roller coaster ever.  I know the meds are working to some degree but I can't really determine if they're working as well as they're intended too b/c he drinks and I know drugs and alcohol can also play a huge part in the mood factor.

Hi and welcome. I'm sorry you have to join us but hope we can help support you. I know what you mean about passing it down- mental illness runs in my dh's family and I am anxious about my son, but a lot of support at a young age can really help to prevent certain aspects and depths of illnesses.
Looking forward to talking more.
Jill
