Hi,
My name is Shanda. Currently my family and I live in Colorado but we are moving to the area at the end of July. My hubby will be attending the University of Chicago for his PhD. We are looking forward to this next chapter in our life. The areas that we are currently looking at for homes are Downers Grove (1st choice), Schaumburg, Palatine, and Westmont. I am looking to maybe make some friends in the area so that I am not completely alone when we get there. My boys are Blaise - 7 years and Dalik- 2 months.
I look forward to hearing from you soon!!!!
Sorry, I know absolutely nothing about the far-flung burbs!
Have you looked in Hyde Park (where U of C is located)? It would be worth having a smaller home to be close to the University and not need a car.

Yes but my DH's cousin who's a homicde detective told us it's not a good area. DH is just gonna commute by train and bus.

Your cousin-in-law makes me laugh! He would consider me to be a terrible mother, because I let my teen and her friends go to Hyde Park on the train. They walk around campus, spend hours at Powell's book store: http://www.powellschicago.com/contact.html ; go to the Medici for lunch: http://medici57.com/

She tested into three high schools(Lane Tech,Whitney Young,Northside Prep)she didn't want to spend an hour or more on mass transit each way, so she decided to continue homeschooling, she is a student at Ashworth College Online, useing thier excellent high school program. She does enjoy meeting new people and hang out with friends,we don't homeschool for religious reason, we homeschool cause she was bullied so bad in first grade, and nothing was done about it(this is a don't get me started topic)

Unfortunately, Alyssa wasn't accepted at Northside (about two miles from us). She was in the Academic Center (7-8th grade) at Whitney and was happy to stay for high school. She doesn't mind the long commute (45-90 minutes); she has made great friends through her commute. We love the diversity of the school and the scholarship opportunities (class of 2009 average ws $26,000).
I am sorry that your daughter had a bad experience with the public schools; even with their warts, they have been wonderful for Alyssa.

Robin,
I loved the diversity of the school too(My now 21 year old was in All City Chior in grade school), I tried to talk her into attending, but she had better arguments for continuing with homeschooling. What I did like about her argument was that she didn't focus on what happened before.
Yes even with all of the public schools falts there are good things and it is a good options for those who can not afford private school or homeschool.
