What can I use for a treasure chest?

I need a "treasure chest" for kids to dig around in sand and find "buried treasure". I bought one of those styrofoam coolers w/ a top because it looks like a treasure chest, and I started spray-painting it gold and it ate right through the foam so IDK what to use. I know you can buy cardboard treasure chest decorations but they are pretty small and not deep like the cooler is.

You can get brown wrapping paper from the dollar tree and wrap the cooler then decorate it.
