My son has been getting cold sores a lot lately. Was wondering if there was something I could give him to help them not break out as often. He's 15, seems like stress, sun, and citrus foods adds to the break outs as well.
Try having him take L-lysine. It helps with fever blisters- I believe it will help with those, too.
JC- We do this already. He is taking 1000 mg 4x's day. It has helped a lot but they still come out if there is stress or to much sunlight or whenever they want to. Guess it's something he will have to deal with the rest of his life. They look so painful, and he says they are, sometimes they even bleed. :(
Simply - Never tried that, sounds to me like that is going to be very painful, but at this point we will try anything.
Thanks both of you ladies for your help.
My friend would get cold sores if she drank too much acidic drinks. You could possibly try that to see if it's something causing them that he could just avoid.
We started about a week ago stopping the intake of soda, tomatoes, grapefruit, strawberries, orange juice and other acidic foods and or drinks. Many of which are good for him health wise just not lip sore wise. I keep up updated if we notice that it does indeed help with the break outs.
Although it is a bit expensive Melissa Essential oils help, it is one of the few oils that can be added neet.
My kids get cold sores, but they are significantly younger. Unfortunately, I am the one that passed it on to them. I have been getting cold sores since I was about 10. In fact, when I got one of the first few breakouts, my mom took me to the doc and he called in a coligue to check it out!! that's how uncommon it was!! lollllll I feel old.
The only thing that ever helped me in getting rid of the sore was to use a needle to lance it. It would scab over and be all nasty, but it would speed up healing from a few weeks to about 1 and 1/2 weeks. As a kid, I just couldn't stand the itching sensation, and had to open them to relieve it. When lancing, make sure you get every individual pustule.
IMO anything moist would just irritate it more. The lancing doesn't typically leave a scar. Picking an immature scab does, though. I am not a doctor, this is just the opinion of someone who has been dealing with a similar issue from a young age.
hope it helps!
