Hi I am new to the group we just adopted a Doxie from a rescue.  He is 3 yrs old.  My question is how much food should a doxie get per day.  He is a little bit overweight so I want to get him to a healthy weight.  Also what kind of dog food do you use.  Thanks =)

Welcome to the group and congrats on your new family member!

I am not sure how much they should eat, as we are very lucky and can leave the food down all day for our doxie and it takes him days to empty his bowl.  I know other moms here will have a better answer for you.

We feed him Royal Canin #27.

Hi mama! Doxie's are very prone to being overweight, and wearing well. Unfortunately it's also very dangerous for them. My vet just gave me a very stern lecture about how my dog is an 8 and needs to be in the "too thin" (like 3) area. (because of his back) Your vet can suggest a good diet too. Mine has Porky on Purina "Veterinary Diets" Overweight Management or OM. They gave me a free 6lb bag to start with which was nice. Your vet may offer the same promotion. He's eating a little over a cup a day split into two feedings. But they have suggestions on the back of the bag, because it depends on the weight they should be.

What's funny is he used to be a grazer too and would leave a bowl full to last days. But he still ended up overweight, table scraps and no restrictions on how much he ate I guess. Now he gobbles down the little bit of food I give him like I guess most dogs do. I never thought he was overweight, but I guess doxies are good at hiding those types of things.

I'm interested to see how much he weighs when we go back on thursday.

Good luck on getting your pup down as well! :)

Thanks everyone. My vet told me to give him a cup of food once a day.  He said I can split it into two feedings.  Hopefully he adjust well to this.  =)

Welcome to the group! One cup is a good amount to give your doxie. We divide ours in half too. How much weight does your doxie need to lose? Please keep us updated on how he does. Oh, we feed Infinia to our three doxies.

He needs to lose 5-10lbs.  He is a chunker.   His last home kept him well fed and in a kennel 12 hours a day and they put a bark collar on him.  He was raw from the bark collar they had on him.  He has healed nicely from that.  He is such a good boy and he doesn't bark that much for us.

We feed our 2 mini doxies a raw diet. They each get 1.3 oz of raw chicken mix twice a day.the chicken mix has the right amount of meat, bone and organ meat.I also give them 1/4 - 1/2 c of green beans once a day twice a week.If they are starting to look chunky I cut them back to a little less than 1 oz of meat.So far they have been doing well on this diet.
