I was wondering how many of you get this question either professionally or personally on a regular basis. "Can you draw Disney, Veggies, Thomas the Tank, _______ for me?" You fill in the blank. I feel like people judge my artwork on whether or not I can copy someone elses. That irritates the crap out of me so much so, that I have quit doing any work that copies another person even for big money. I used to make a lot of money doing rooms to match a bedding set for kids but I felt bad copying the artists work firstly (there there is that law thingy) and secondly, no matter how good you can copy, it is never the same as the original artist. Kind of like carrying a knock off Coach bag, what's the point? The answer is YES i can but No I don't. I only do original works of art. Isn't that the point of being an artist? I am so tired of being judged by if I can copy a Disney princess. Am I being too sensetive about this or not? You tell.

no, you're not being too sensitive.  I am the same way.  I do digital arts, and I have people wanting birthday invitations with a popular character, or I had someone want a logo done with a popular character attatched to it.  I say sorry, it's illegal, and anyone who does it can be prosecuted.  People rarely get caught copying things like Mickey Mouse, etc. but if they did, it'd be trouble.  I look at it mostly from a legal standpoint.  I will use like color schemes, though.  I had a friend who did a Rainbow Brite theme for her daughter's birthday, and I made her collage, and her thank you cards, but I just used rainbow colors and colorful stars, but I didn't copy anything.

I've never been approached to do copies of another artist's work but I have gotten alot of requests (mainly from kids) to do freebee drawings of their horse or cat or whatever.  Sorry!  I'm not going to put all that time and effort into something so someone doesn't have to pay for it.

i actually hate being treated like an art jukebox. i'm polite about it, but i'm not interested in being a copy machine. if it makes me a temperamental artist--so be it.

I'm largely a fan artist, and I enjoy celebrating my favorite characters by drawing them in different situations or outfits. I don't re-create the characters, but I do re-imagine them from time to time in "what if" sorts of situations. Accordingly, I receive many commissions along the same vein by other people who would like to see their favorite characters in X situation. I don't produce much original art-- I never have. I enjoy making art for other people more than for myself. I've never claimed copyrighted characters as my own, but I do own the art I produce.

I think it's a deeply personal matter. I know some people who take tremendous offense at requests for someone else's character/design/concept. Others are ambivalent. Still others, like me, very much enjoy it. Ultimately, the choice, as an artist, is yours. I receive many requests I don't honor. I typically only draw art that interests me unless I really need the work. Recently, I've partnered with a local cake decorator who often asks me for guidance on designing character-based cakes for children. I can't turn them down because I know how delighted children and adults are when they get something original involving a favorite character. It fulfills me to bring them joy.
