Open adoption is an adoption that allows for an ongoing relationship among the birth family, adoptive family, and adoptee. Fully open adoptions can often include extended family members such as birth grandparents and siblings.

There are several degrees of openness, and often, these are erroneously referred to as "open" adoption; however, they are actually less than fully open and range from an exchange of names between placing and adopting parents, to regular exchanges of letters and photos, either directly or through a third party.

This group is for anyone involved in one of the three facets of open adoption: (Birthfamily, Adoptive Family, Adoptees) OR if you have questions about open adoption.

It is my intention that this group is used for positive discussions and dialogue involving our experiences. I realize that many people out there have had promises broken and your opinion about open adoption may be different from others. You are welcome here, too. Just please respect that most members of this group feel strongly about keeping the lines of communication open between birth/firstfamilies, adoptive families and children who have been or will be adopted.
