You should try letting him CIO, he is old enough and it will teach him to go to sleep on his own, otherwise you may find yourself goingin there everynight until he is 2 or 3 years old.

What it CIO??? Sorry new to this
Quoting TheirQueen:CIO is cry it out i am having trouble get my son to sleep too . He is ten months old but i cant stand to see him cry like that or hear him sreaming momma . i just cant do that to my baby .
My Doctor said not to the CIO because it can be damaging to the baby talk with your OB/GYN for tips I've found it helpful
At 18 months he should be able to understand basic concepts like "time for sleep, night night now", ect. Is he still nursing? What do the nightwakings consist of? How long does it take him to go back to sleep? If you are opposed to CIO (as am I) I've been told gradual elimination works best. So essentially you limit the time you spend with him each night waking little by little until you just are able to stand at his door and reassure him briefly with your presence. The Fussy Baby Book by Dr. Sears has some good advice.
If it makes you feel any better my 13 month old still wakes 1-3x a night to nurse. I never had to deal with this for so long with my oldest so I feel your pain. My only hope is that she will outgrow this :/
