Mange?

Hello ladies. I am new to the group as well as new to having a dog (besides when I was a kid). We adopted a Yorkie Mix named Roscoe on Wednesday and I have noticed his fur is thin on his chest and in the pit of the arms in the front. Also he is missing hair on the back part of both ears and looks like he has scarring but he never goes after his ears. He randomly scratches himself or will lay down and bite or lick his from legs and paws for a few seconds. I do not see that he has any patches of dry skin or irratated skin. Its just that he itches and his fur is thin. Could it be the start of mange? Or maybe stress or poor diet? If it is mange, has anyone experienced this with their animal before? Was it super expensive? He has an appt Saturday and I am going to bring it up when I go and see if they can do a skin scraping. Im just so worried about him and I feel so bad. He is such a good dog and has been through so much. He was surrendered twice. The second time because the last owners couldnt afford care for his gingivitis. So this past Tuesday he had his teeth scaled and 3 teeth removed. Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated. I am new to this and im so confused lol.

Here is my Roscoe. He is napping right now. Maybe I can get a pic of his thinning fur when he wakes up.

If it is mange, it is easy to treat.  You can buy over the counter medicated shampoo. It may also be allergies. Our dog had thining hair all along his back and butt when he had allergies. Switching dog food took care of the problem.

I doubt it is mange.  Are the spots hot or warm? Any fleas?

It might be stress? Could be the shampoo they used on him.  Could be his diet?  He could have a allergic reaction to something. Grass? Our dog was allergic to plastic.  He could not have plastic bowls.

My friend has a Yorkie she feeds him  royal canin for Yorkies.  http://products.royalcanin.us/products/dog-food/yorkshire-terrier-28.aspx

No hot spots, red spots, or fleas. His skin looks fine. I'm thinkings its either allergies and diet. I will look at that site for food.

Thank you so much ladies, this kinda gave me a little less to worry about until his appt.

I was also thinking allergies.  My first guess would be something in his food as that is usually the most common. however it could also be something in his shampoo, a fragrance, etc...Did the place you got him from happen to mention anything about it to you?

No they didn't mention anything. I adopted him from our local Humane Society and he felt very filthy and smelled terrible so the day after we brought him home I bathed him in Hartz 3 in 1 Dog Shampoo. I'm thinking allergies from food or the soap as well.

I bring in rescues for fostering and adopting, this dog was infested with mange, you can see her thin fur and the redness of her under parts this is mange. be careful not only it spread to my other dogs but my husband, son and I got it very uncomfortable.  It is easy to treat my vet gave us a liquid that I had to give the dogs and a antibiotic cream for us my advise is to take him to the vet ASAP

This post was old. We had him to the vet a few days after this post and he had a skin scraping done. Came back ok. Seems to be allergies of some sort or stress. We changed his diet and he seems to be itching less and the scabs on his ears healed up and the fur is coming back. Thank you for your reply though. Poor pup, that looks so itchy and painful : (

Its tough to watch them suffer and not know what's going on. Especially with rescue dogs, not knowing what they have been through and all : (

That is why I have this photo, I work through the court system and when a dog is neglected or abused I get the animal until the court case comes up I testify and the judge releases the animal to me for rehabilitation while the ex owner get penned up in a "cage", you can not imagine the shape of these dogs when I get them.
