Over 18 million dogs and cats are killed in U.S. shelters each year.
I say "killed", because many of them are put to death in gas chambers.
This method of execution is still legal in most states.
Death in the gas chamber is not quick or painless, but it is much less expensive than injection euthanasia, which is the main reason it is still so widely used.
Why are so many animals put to death?
Because there are simply too many of them.
What's the main reason for the dog and cat overpopulation in this country?
Irresponsible and careless human beings.
Puppy mills, backyard breeders, and thoughtless owners who don't spay or neuter their pets, are all to blame for this shameful waste.
In my area, as in most localities, there are numerous organizations that offer dog and cat sterilization free of charge.

Having no money is not a valid excuse for not sterilizing your pet.

We need to limit the breeding of dogs and cats to responsible, reputable breeders who are knowledgeable and careful about which animals they breed.

Don't create more victims for the gas chambers!!
Please spay or neuter your pet, if you haven't already done so.

Become the change you wish to see in the world.

Oh--how I agree with you. especially cats. I've seen so many people that just let their cats keep reproducing and laugh about it. This is just plain cruel.

I agree 110%!  I rescued a pure-bred siamese cat from someone who did not take care of her, they willingly handed her over to me.  After I rescued her, I found out she was pregnant.  She was not even a year and a half old, and I found out that this was her second litter!  I worked with an adoption agency to find the kittens homes when they were old enough, but I had them all spayed and neutered first before being adopted out, the mother was also.  I don't know why people just let their cats run the streets without being spayed or neutered.  It's definitely very cruel!

Thank you! I cannot shout it loud enough...SPAY & NEUTER your animals! And if you can't afford to spay & neuter most counties have spay/neuter programs for low income households. In Kansas, PawPrints has a mobile van that travels to towns all over the midwest spaying and neutering for $35.00, which includes a rabies shot if needed. They also have a program within the program that allows low income people to recieve lower or no cost spay/neutering.
So please spay and neuter. And if your animals are spayed/neutered consider contributing to a spay/neuter program so others can too. Or if you know someone who needs an animal spayed/neutered, offer to help them pay for it if you can.

I used to work at a shelter and we would give out free spay certificates to people who brought in litters and they still wouldn't get the dang cats fixed...sigh.

I agree 110%! Spay & Neuter.Check out my profile and you will see how much I support this. if I had the money,I would build a clinic in my town for people to get their pets done for free and I would cover all the cost (gotta win the mega lottery pot)

I get so mad at people for how they treat their animals. They don't take care of them, don't have them spayed or neutered and what I am personally angry about is when they move and abandon them. That happens a lot in our apartment complex. There are so many strays around here.I have been feeding 12.Now the complex is acting like it's my fault and telling me if I continue they will terminate my lease. There are 3 kittens approximately 6 months that I have known since they were old enough to leave their mom.We are getting a lot of cold weather and snow right now so I let them come in and they have stayed here for the past week. And all the others when they come around I let them in to eat and sometimes they stay in a little while to warm up and go back out. Most of them don't really trust people.I  just got information on low cost spay and neuter for the kittens and have talked to some people about T.N.R. for the others if possible. My husband is on disability and I and not working because of my health but we will not let these animals be hungry or cold. And I have a nice neighbor who every week when she buys cat food for her cats buys extra for me to feed the strays. Here as a picture of the babies relaxing on my couch.

Thank you for posting this!  I used to work at a shelter, and I have been a spay/neuter advocate all of my adult life.  There's no good reason not to!  Not when our shelters are full!
