Houston offers quite a bit of interesting cultural things to do. I was there a few times and enjoyed it. There's good museums there. I saw a couple of concerts there. There's also very good shopping there. There are many different types of good restaurants to pick from and many ethnic ones too.
Another place I'd like to recommend is Galveston. It's a lovely seaside, Victorian city. If you like beautiful older buildings and houses, then you'll enjoy this. There's a unique hotel built right ontop of a pier over the gulf. I ate dinner at a good seafood restaurant across the street from the hotel and was amazed at how interesting it looked. There's good restaurants and shopping. There's cultural activities and museums. We visited an airplane museum, which was a big treat. There were many real airplanes to look at and a few to go inside of. My son really loved that.
If you are going to the D.F.W. area, there is the Fort Worth Zoo (one of the best), the Science Museum, the Stockyards has lots of great places to eat, an amusement area for kids, and of course Billy Bob's for the grownups. The Galleria mall in Dallas has multilevels, an ice skating rink, and a hotel. Arlington has Six Flags over Texas and Wet and Wild as well as Texas Rangers Baseball.
San Antonio has the Riverwalk, SeaWorld of Texas, another GREAT zoo, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, and last but not least The Alamo!
Austin has the Bob Bullock museum, a great children's museum, and lots of music places and restaurants for the adults.
Corpus Christi has the U.S.S. something-or-other, a great aquarium, and the beach.
Galveston is lots of fun. Great seafood and fun in the sun as well as Busch Gardens (not a theme park, but they do have a waterpark)
Waco has a Dr. Pepper museum (in case you are passing through)
Kilgore has the East Texas oil museum (if you happen to be passing through on the way to somewhere else, it is worth a visit)
Glenrose has a dinosaur park.
I know there is lots more, these are just the things that come to mind.
San Antonio also has a Children's Museum, Witte Museum and the Institute of Texas Culture.
Also for summer time Schlitterbahn water park is 45 minutes north of San Antonio. Greene is also a fun place to got tubing if we have had any rain. Natural Bridge Caverns is also within 30 minutes of SA. --K
