My name is Tanya and I have a 1yr old little girl. I love to read and was read Grimm's fairy-tales  growing up. I always imagined carrying on the tradition of bedtime stories and what not to my kids. Now I know she's only 1 and getting her to sit still for even a minute is a challenge, but at what age will she actually start enjoying being read to? I try now and I notice her looking at a page, maybe two as I point out colors or babies or animals, then either she grabs the book to chew on it or just up and toddles away. So am I starting too early? Or is it just a process over time where eventually 1 page will turn in to 3 which will turn into a book....?

  • Hey!  1 is DEFINITELY not too young to start reading to.  It's statistically proven that if you read to a child every day - by the time they're 6 they will have 20% higher vocabs than kids who weren't read to and higher IQ levels... my little guy has been read to since he was about 10 months old and it was tough b/c he wasn't interested then, but now he brings ME books and wants me to read to him (he's 16 months old).  So, READ READ READ :)  Even if she eats the book she still hears you...

  • Oh my goodness, no!!  What a wonderful age to start introducing them to the magical world of books!!  And someday, instead of eating them, they will be reading them!!  I love to read to my children.  It is a highlight of my day.  I have a 19 month old and a 13 month old!

  • Definitely, read to your   child NOW.   I read to all of my children as soon as they looked like they could focus on the pictures of a book.  My 19 year old daughter still likes for me to read to  her sometimes.  She says that it comforts her.

I am a reading tutor and you would be surprised how many children are not read to in the home.  The sooner you read to your child , the better  they will do in school and love to read books.  Enjoy these upcoming years.

  • My mom had an English major in college(she had me at 40 and was trying to capture what she had to put off when my brothers and sisters were little) and we had all kinds of  books and  educational magazines every where. She also wrote stories and poetry and had some published in ameture writer books.  My favorite gift, when I was little, was a gift cert. to the local book store and to this day(30 with 3 kids) I can not let books go.
Does your local library have a story time? Ours does and they also have little tables with the "board books" in little bins on them so the little ones have books ready to look at. Board and plastic type books I have expirenced with my own can stand up to the rath of slober and destructive hands. I think Barnes and Noble book stores have a family reading night if you have one near you and want to check it out.
I also did this workshop at a Headstart conference that showed how you can use the t.v. as a tool for learning. Take a portion of a show and let them watch it but then turn it off and do hands on things like color pages, seek and find(where's a green thing, where are your eyes, count the birds in the front yard) also include books or magazines to find similar themes to what they show on the t.v. program when she gets older. Then if she sees something she will know how to take from the t.v. program and learn on her own with daily expirences in the car, at the store, playing with others, ect. At this age you could point out her favorite characters having a book. If your little girl is playing sit and read to her while she's playing.
When she is ready to sit she will. My kids really didn't want to sit til about 2-3yrs and then I had to get books with their favorite characters in them. Maybe you could make it part of her bedtime ritual. Bath, pjs, reading while she lays down. Good luck! Remember you are helping her be a very smart cookie when you even try and fail just remember to then try again later and let her see you reading.
My mom isn't with us any more so reading is something special I want to pass on to my kids cause I know she would have.

  • Lord no, Start that brain development now. I would even introduce music.  Mine did that at first. It is the first steps, but they will lead to greater walks along the pages. As long as it is not forced reading time she will learn to enjoy it (possibly).

  • I'm  not sure why this o.p. showed up, I must have hit 'quote' and since I don't have a lot of time I'm leaving it! LOL I've been reading to my three year old since the day (or maybe a few days after!) she came home and she LOVES books!! We go to the library a few times a wek and that's on the side of all the books I buy her! Start reading now!!
