Hi.  My children are now 18, 21, 27 and 28, but I started  reading to them when they were  newborns and hopefully inspired them to read.  I am  a reading tutor  in an elementary school.  I participate in a program that teaches 1st graders to  read  fluently and help kindergarteners to know their ABC's and sounds forward and backward and some sight words.  It is a rewarding experience.  If anyone needs some advice with their 5 or 6 year olds, maybe I can help.

Me, I read  every day.  It is a great escape.

I just wanted to say Kuddo's.  I am an avid reader.  I can't keep books around without reading them.

I think what you are doing is great, but don't you get frustrated at the fact a lot of the kids don't get ed support at home.
I am also a licensed teacher and have a fourth, soon to be fifth, grader.  I  think that there should be more support for those who give of themselves for others children.

So again, Kuddos.

Yes, I get very frustrated when I learn that a student isn't getting support at home.  At least 50% of the kindergarteners I work with do not have parents who read to them.  (in    any language).   Some parents think that because their child can sing the ABC song that they  know their abc's.   I have found out different.  I just started with a new student ( he just transferred from a private school) who knows about 10-12 sight words, but doesn't know 1/2 of his sounds and has no clue of what to do to use at least his 1st letter sounds.   You  would think that the parents would have noticed this.  I figured it out in two 15 min. sessions.  At least he seems to have lots of books at home, but someone should still be reading to HIM.

God bless you in your profession.   Yes, I think that teachers should get the praise  of police and firemen.  They are so vital  to our nations existence.   Have a great end of the school year.  :]laurie
