Check craft stores for a macrame class. Those are the knots that are used to make hemp jewelry. You can also buy books on how to do macrame knots. I would use embroidery floss for practice. It's usually cheaper. Once you get proficient with the knots organizing the knots into a design for a bracelet or necklace is pretty easy. The problem I usually run into is that I never use any patterns or write anything down so sometimes I start and realize I didn't cut my hemp string lengths long enough for my necklaces.
You know when I was in the Navy, I was a Boatswainmate, and we did all the "fancywork" on the quarterdecks & such. But being female I called it Macrame (sp?) but the guys would never admit calling it that but that's what it is!!! LOL So now it's just an automatic when I see the word to call it "Fancywork" LOL
Here's a website with some tutorials on it - hope it helps :)
I don't quite know how this knot work got the name macrame but yes all the macrame knots are just the old sailors knots. I actually learned the knots originally from an uncle who used to do hammocks by hand and learned them in the navy. Then in girl scouts I learned to use the knots to make planter hangings and dog leashes. In my teens my mom suggested a "My daughter and me" jewlery making course and was suprised when they used the macrame knots. There are a lot of fun items you can make when you learn the knots.
