Free images for iron on transfers

I want to make some cute t-shirts for my son using iron on transfers. I want to use some images like "the fonz" from Happy Days and some other cute, vintage images. I got the idea from the book Crafty Mamas and she says in the book to do an online search for images....but I did that and I'm not finding any luck. Does anyone know where I can find some images that I can use?

You might use like a J C Penney catalogue.  I have taken images from them & made greeting cards.
