With Thanksgiving coming up, maybe dress them up as turkeys, and they have to put what they're thankful for inside the can?

Did they have plastic lids?  My kids decorated the outside with construction paper, etc and used them as drums.   For a Spring project, we made 'windsocks' by turning the can upside down ( open end facing down)   decorated the outside and taped long ribbons or streamers on inside. I think we poked a hole through the top for a loop so we could hang it ( or maybe we used a glue gun - don't remember ) .
