Hey all,
My baby girl Lily and I came accross Eebee in Comcast's On Demand. She was only a few months old, but glued her eyes to it immediately. I have a ten year old son, and can honestly say it is unlike anything I've ever seen to date. I instantly loved how it focused on parental involvement. There were so many fun things to get messy with...once she could at least sit up, anyhow. ;)
We live in Key West, quite far from civilization - you know, things like Target or Barnes and Noble. A couple of months ago, when Lily was about six months old, I got an e-mail from the Eebee website saying that Eebee was going to be live in the flesh (errr, felt?) at only a couple of Barnes and Noble locations nationwide for a launch of some new books and toys. One of the three locations was in Miami. That is a three hour drive from Key West...each way. It was a no brainer...we were hitting the road!
My husband, 10 year old son, breastfed six month old and I piled into the car in time to get there early and hopefully meet Eebee. I wanted to go simply to express my gratittude to the co-creator in person. Well, for that and to see the look on Lily's face when she came face to face with the real Eebee. It was going to be worth six hours in the car plus many stops for feedings/changings.
We got within 20 minutes of the B&N location when traffic on the road came to a stand still in the FL Everglades. We don't have proper TV news in the Keys (our news feeds in from Miami, but it seems the Miami news people forget that). It was so bad and went on for so long that people were getting out of their cars and getting to know each other. There was no traffic coming from the other direction, aside from the occasional police motorcycle. We had no way of knowing that the road was being closed down for a big charity motorcycle ride down the Keys. After a half hour of waiting to know what was going on, hundreds of motorcycles began whizzing by us as we sat on the concrete median. They just kept COMING, and I was beginning to freak out a little inside while checking my watch every 30 seconds or so. My husband and kids however were much more accepting of the situation; they were laughing and waving to the bikers, getting thank-you honks from many.
We totally missed the Eebee appearance. Not that Lily will ever know that. A great family memory was made instead, so I guess it all balances out. I don't really tell many people about this, as they would never understand why we'd go to such great lengths (literally) for a baby show character. I am guessing anyone here would completely get it.
Next time Eebee comes to Miami, we'll get a hotel room the night before. ;)
