My husband and I just received a "save the date" for his cousin's wedding. It's in November...in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico (FUN!) My daughter will only be 10 months old then. Have any of you traveled long distances with small babies? Do you think it's safe? Any advice? Thanks!!
I have vacationed with my kids in Mexico three times. The first time we went, my daughter was 18 months olds. The second time, my son had just turned one. I told everyone before our first trip that this would either be the best thing we ever did or the dumbest. It was definitely the best! We've always had good experiences and never had any problems.
One piece of advice my ped gave me (and you should talk to yours before you go) was to take Pepto Bismal as a preventative measure. One dose in the morning and one in the evening will ward off tummy problems. I use the same advice for myself and always feel good. Also, I'm a travel agent and give that advice to my clients.
If you have any other questions about my experiences, don't hesitate to ask. I love talking travel!
I've never been to Mexico, but have taken my sons to Guatemala and Panama. They were 5 and 7 when we went to Guate, and 6 and 8 in Panama. I've got a baby on the way and fully intend to keep traveling! Going to Cabo, a major tourist area should be fine. As far as the water situation, I take GSE when I'm traveling to areas where it's questionable. Grapefruit seed extract is sold at organic markets and is marketed as an antibiotic and disinfectant. I mix 1-2 drops of the jell in a soda or lemonaid once a day. (It's very bitter-don't mix with a bottle of water!) 2 weeks in a village in Guatemala and I had no trouble. Make sure to have some electrolyte packets for baby just in case as dehydration from diarrhea can be very serious esp. in young kids. But like I said, you should be fine. Have fun!
Yes! San Jose del Cabo is great! I cried when we had to leave. Our daughter was turning 2 when we went to Cabo.
We first travelled to Seattle w/her when she was 10 months old. They actually adjust a lot better then we do. Just go about your day following the time there and when they are tired, let them rest. Going out to dinner was challenging.
We like to stay in places where we can cook for ourselves.Get an efficency if you can.
If you stay near the Mega shopping store, they have really great already fresh hot prepared food that you can take home and eat. The roasted chicken was fantastic.
When our daughter was 3 we took her to China with us, she did great despite the serious jet lag. I was pregnant with my second. Poor guy is 18 months and hasn't been anywhere. He has some health issues.
I recommend getting a small doll, game, or new snack to open up for every hour you will be flying and don't forget about walking around as much as possible while waiting in the airport. Keep it fresh. You might get lucky and they might actually sleep.
Oh I'm jealous, have a great trip!
The first time we went to Mexico (Cozumel) with DD she had just turned one year old the week before. My in-laws and sister-in-law's family were also there and so there was no shortage or entertainment for DD. She did eat the food at the resort and didn't have a single problem.
In fact, we had such a good time we went home, found a great deal for the same resort and went back a week-and-a-half later. The second trip was with only DD, my husband and I and it was just as good as the first trip. My profile pic was taken on the second trip.
So, if it's not obvious, my personal advice is to go and have fun!!!!

One more idea - we saved small plastic containers before the trip to use for sand toys. Yogurt cups, cool whip bowls, sour cream containers, anything along those lines. DD loved playing with them and we didn't have to worry about losing toys we bought for the trip. We left them with another family when we left the resort. :)
Thanks girls!!! This is all encouraging! Now I just have to talk my hubbie into splurging for the airline tix!!
My husband and I took our then 23-month-old daughter to San Jose del Cabo with a total of 14 family members for a little reunion of sorts. We had a fabulous time!
Just be safe about drinking only bottled water, especially for the baby. If you will still be nursing then, all the better! I'd pack or ship some baby food too and steer clear of fruits/veggies that can't be peeled. My dad did get food (or water?) poisoning while there but he was the only one in our group - we think it was from the shelffish he had one night b/c that was the only thing he had that no one else ate/drank. Be sure to pick up a big flat of bottled water while you're there to stay hydrated too.
I say go for it! Viva Mexico!

Find out if anyone is organising something with the plane tickets and hotel. If not, perhaps you can get the ball rolling...

I live in Arizona right on the border of Mexico. I am not personally familiar with the place you're going to however my one suggestion based on life on the border is just be aware of your surroundings.
