We're flying overseas this summer and are planning to do some hiking when we arrive. I'd like to take our hiking backpack (it's an old kelty kids that has served us well) to use in the airport and when we arrive. I've searched TSA and the airline's websites to see if this is allowed but can't seem to find anything specifically related to framed backpack carriers. Can they be used and gate checked the same as strollers? Has anyone had issues with them being damaged? I'd hate to arrive at our destination and it be unusable!
As we might upgrade to a newer version, any suggestions on what brand/model you've liked the best would be appreciated. We have an Ergo and a variety of other baby carrying apparatus so it's only a new framed backpack that we're interested in. Thanks!!
I am not sure if they will let you take it all the way to the gate, but you probably could check it. I would call the airline and ask, because they may have there own regulations in addition to the the TSA rules. If they don't have an answer, then hopefully they could direct you to someone who will. Good luck and have an awesome trip.
I would recommend packing it carefully in your luggage and using the Ergo in the airport. I found a backpack very awkward the one time I did try getting through the airport with it. Hard to put on, take off, etc.
I don't see why it couldn't be gate-checked but why risk it being damaged? It would be safer in your checked bag, ideally a hard-backed pack or place it on the bottom where your luggage is reinforced.
Have a good trip!
