So I was trying to do some surveys to earn some extra money. The company I was looking at on line kept asking me for a credit card. Why do they do that? I am not about to give my information out to someone I don't know. Help me understand what is going on and what is a good company to go with.

Most all sites have an option to go to the free offers. That is what I do, therefore you don't have to give a credit card number. Search the sites you are using for these free offers and just do those.
