Hi there,

My name is Sarah and I had our first on January 23rd, 2012. He was born at 28 weeks, weighing 2 lbs. 3 oz. and was 14.5 inches. He's doing well and is currently on high flow oxygen and has a feeding tube but that's it. I'm starting to feel a bit frsutrated, tired and lost in this whole experience and I was hoping for some support from other moms who have been through this. I panic over long term problems from being born so early but I know that he could be perfectly fine. My husband and I are very active and when I think that he may not have the lungs to climb Everest it breaks my heart especially since my husband and I are mountain climbers of sorts (we're avid backcountry skiers). I know that whatever happens will be fine but at the moment I'm struggling with it all. Thanks for you help,

Sarah

Hello Sarah, my name is Samantha and I had my son literally a day after you at 30 weeks and he was born 2 lbs 2 oz. I'm frustrated also but i've learned it takes literally 1 minute at a time to get through this. How is your son doing now?

Try not to worry so much. My boy was born at 30 weeks and 6 days. He was 3 pounds 5 oz. He is 2 now and so active! He runs around like a mad man and rarely tires out.
It sounds like your little one is doing well, try to focus on what a great job he is doing and have faith that you will be able to be active as a family.

My heart goes out to you and your family.  My little girl was a 28 weeker too!  She was born in July of this year and now at over 6 months she is actually wearing 6 month old clothes!  It is a very emotional roller coaster you will be going through.  Ask lots of questions and study the NICU nurses practices.  And when the NICU nurses get you involved in diaper changes (although scarey) get in there and do it.  These small practices will help fulfill the mommy instincts.  Keep up the kangaroo care - it is so good for baby and you!  I struggled a good 2 months while she was in NICU, highs and lows, some nurses would tell me good things and the other would scare me.

After my girl was born and went into NICU I documented it into a blog.  I wanted to encourage and help validate some of the feelings and hardships to mommies like you, that have a micro-preemie.  If you go back into the archives of August you may see some common feelings.

And please feel free to message me or facebook me off the blog.  Hope some of this gives you comfort.
