To all Detroit Mamas... Need advice

I am contemplating a move to Detroit next year. Hopefully if I can transfer to Wayne State... what area in Wayne County is the nicest/safest (I know, I know. It's Detroit, but I have faith that it will turn around and I need to be as close to the school as possible). Thoughts, suggestions... Also if you can recommend any apartment complexes that are great and reasonable.

I grew up on the west side, so I would recommend Livonia, Redford, Westland... There are a lot of really nice safe areas around the city. Are you familiar with the area at all? Do you have school-aged children?

I'm a little familiar. I grew up in GR, so I'm good at navigaiting around a city. My son is 4 and will be in kindergarten next year

Well, I don't know anything about the east side's schools but I know that Livonia has excellent schools, especially at the elementary level. Also in Oakland county, Novi, Northville & Farmington have good schools. Plymouth is great but more expensive.
