Is this a reason for divorce?? --added more info

Husband says that he wants a divorce because the wife is spending money on stupid things.

Is that a reason for a divorce or a cop out?

Disclaimer: Not my marriage.

Edit: I am sure we all know who I am talking about. I think it's a cop out and he doesn't want the responsibilities of being a husband or father and just wanted to bang the homewrecker. He said himself that he never wanted a kid, but they planned it. I think the wife is acting out and doing this because of HIM. This whole thing pisses me off because there is a sweet little girl who is in the middle of this. There was $8000 on the card and all but $200 was spent. It's just extra money.

Depends on what and whose money she is spending, for what exact purpose and if it's a repetitive thing.

How excessive is the spending? How long has it been going on? Has she sought help for compulsive shopping? What is she buying he considers 'stupid'?

It all boils down to respect and trust. If she does it so much that it damages the respect and trust in their marraige then yes...divorce may be necessary.
