i use mam ms sir mister for just about everybody except close friends and young kids..

its a way of showing my respect.

I say respect. Especially for your elders. It's just how I was brought up but it can also be used in an insulting way I guess. Like someone being a smartass about it? But for the most part, I say respect.

Respect.... I was raised to respect my elders (sir, ma'am, Mr. Mrs. Ms. Etc.)

I say respect.
However growing up (north) we never said this. it wasnt untill i moved down south that i got into alot of trouble for not saying it. we dont say it in our house. i prefer mom. not ma'am. and i dont really use it IRL either. even tho ive lived down south for near 16 yrs now.
