Is there a rule for how long a preemie baby should expect to be in the NICU?

My friend has been on bedrest for 4 weeks due to preterm labor. They are HOPING she will make it to 34 weeks......

It really depends on how early the baby comes and if there are any problems once the baby is born. I know of some babies that were only there for a few days and others that were there much longer.

It depends on the baby. But when my dd was there they told us to expect her to be there until her due date. She was born Septmeber 15 (10 weeks early), due November 27th and came home October 18th. She was there 33 days.

My hospital releases them at 5 lbs if they eat and breathe on their own. But different hospitals have different guidelines.

Depends on the baby. My son was born at 31 weeks and spent just over a month in the NICU.

Generally, it's until their due date. But thats not always the case. How far along is she now?

My 32 weeker was there for a month (so 36 weeks)

My 2nd 32 weeker was also there for a month (36 weeks also)

My 28 weeker was there for 3 months and came home on his due date (Oct 28)

They keep them until they can eat on their own, breath on their own, and pass a car seat study. My twins were 8 weeks early. One was 4lbs 6 oz, he was in the NICU for 7 weeks. The other was 2lbs 10oz, he was in the NICU for 8 weeks.

When my son was born, they said they usually keep babies until their EED. However, if baby is doing well enough they will send him/her home whenever they feel the baby is ready. My ds was 3 months early but he was only in the NICU for 2 months.
