What was your experience like? Did it go well, have no affect at all or go badly?
I recently found out my insurance won't pay for an induction before 42 weeks and I have needed a little help getting going in the past (kind of wish maybe I had tried it with my last) I was 4 cm and 100% with my last and don't really thing I needed pitocin.
I will be 38 weeks 1 day at my next check up and have my first cervical check if I'm progressed like I was with dd I'm thinking I may ask my midwife to try.
And yes I realize nothing will happen unless baby is ready and that it may have to be done more than once.
*Update* So no sweep not until next week atleast. but! I am 1.5 cm and 50% so its starting. hes only at #2 station tho hopefully he decideds to drop. and even tho, she didnt do a sweep, i had discharge a slight gush with some blood in it. since he so high i doubt it was my water, but ive never had that happen during a check before... feeling a little crampy. She told me to keep doing what im doing Exercise ball, Sex and to pick up a bottle of Evening Primrose Oil.
who knows maybe i wont need to have my membranes stripped after all.
i had it done when i was 37 weeks 6 days, i was already dilated almost 3 cm from early labour so she did the sweep in the morning and i walked and did squats jumping jacks keps very active that day and was having contractions and i had her the next day! i heard it was painful so i was bracing myself but it didnt hurt at all and i didnt bleed from it. so it was very good for me! and i would do it again with another pregnancy. good luck.
My midwife did this to me. I was having to go in every other day for high bp, so they could monitor me and see if I was contracting any. She did this earlier in the day at a regular prenatal appointment. When I went back in the afternoon to be monitored, she did it again. She came back about an hour later, and was going to try to break my water. Before she tried she wanted to make sure I hadn't dilated anymore. When she checked, my water busted all over her.
I think it was from her stripping the membranes like she did. I ended up being in labor for 15+ hours. Once dd was born both of our fevers spiked. We had contracted some kind of infection from my water being broken so long. She had to have antibiotic through an IV for the first 2 days of her life, and so did I.
Sad thing was, I still ended up having to get pitocin because I wasn't contracting strong enough on my own.
