I Live in the Deep South, ask me anything.....

I live in the world of southern belles and doing things our own way. Where, before school half the middle school migrates across Main Street to go to Wards, and policemen know this and sit watching to make sure traffic knows that too.

When I had twins, I was told that scheduling was the way to go. Spanking isn't out of the norm here, and if your kids get out of hand at Walmart, you might just have an old lady come up and tell you off for not disciplining your children.

Up until recently, it was very normal to see people riding in the back of trucks (and now it's more of how long the distance is and the gamble for whether you'll run into a policeman on the way).

We talk slowly. Get over it. We take a long time to make decisions at a restaurant. Get over it.

We even still have an old time style barber shop that only services men. :-o

You are just not normal, an object for speculation, if you aren't 'a Christian'. If you don't want to be pegged with a big bulls-eye on your back saying 'Convert Me!', you better be at least affiliated with some church in your area. Your parent's church 2 hours away doesn't count, it needs to be local.

Anyone else who lives in the Deep South, feel free to chime in!

Gonna be in and out for church and Father's Day, so don't bash me if I don't respond immediately. I'll do it eventually, promise!  :)

*edit* just for info, I've deleted what I originally said, and am replacing it with more of how I, living in MS where there has been major racial conflicts in our past, see the racial side to life here: ok. I think it's generally accepted that northerners and southerners have different cultures, right? Different speed, different accents, different ways of living life in general. We don't hate each other, or at least I don't hope so. Well, that's kinda how it is present day with whites/blacks here. What, 50, 60 years ago, 2 VERY different, clashing cultures that hated each other were forced together and told to get along. Now, the hate is for the most part gone. We've learned to get along. We are integrated as far as schools, churches, etc. are concerned. However, the cultures that made each group unique is still there. Now, we're in the stage of integrating those two cultures, making them into one culture together. But, just like if you threw a bunch of northerners and southerners together, it would take time to make it so you couldn't tell who was who just by listening to them talk, or a handful of other little tells. I would hope this observation wouldn't make me racist, however maybe it's just that I can't see it myself.

*edit 2* Ok, thank you one poster for reminding me of this! Northerners, I honestly don't understand how you LIVE without sweet tea! Down here, restaurants have Tea, and Unsweetened Tea. When we visit north, you have Tea, and sugar packets.

*edit 3* Ahhh! Sorry I forgot to put in football! Is that considered a capital crime? Gulp.......

I'm northeastern Louisiana, but now I live in Kansas. Before that I lived in Oregon, where at work I actually had a woman flat out tell me to NOT call her M'am again. We also have different phrases, and meanings for things. I think it is very neat to see all the different ways we are from the north. The major thing I missed from the south was the FOOD! They did not believe in seasoning anything! :-) When they boiled crawfish they just did it in water and didn't add anything in with it. Also I couldn't get okra, which I love! I also miss how polite the people in the south are. Even the old people here act rude. I was raised to respect your elders and say excuse me and move so that an older person can get by or opening their door and holding it before you go through it, but here nuh-uh. People act like you are in their way all of the time. My husband is also from Louisiana but he has been here for bout 9 years and he warned me that its different. But its weird cus everywhere I've been everyone compliments me on how respectful I and my children are and they absolutely love our accents. I have been told more than once that they love to hear me talk. Lol!

I am in Houston and my husband is from a small town i'm tx and.he was. Shocked that when we went into dennys and they didn't have sweet tea! Lol

Quoting Allisonc7910:

Sounds like every small town in TX.  Very church oriented, etc.  We have sweet tea in Houston in one of our popular fast food chains and its super yummy.  Even in the larger cities, there are still a lot of rednecks in the outskirts.

I think honestly her making the first edit she did could have been left out... cause makes her look racist. She apparently doesn't know anything about the state of Ms... I don't get the whole point of this post anyways. It should get deleted.
Quoting happymommy1105:

I find nothing silly or funny about it.

I find it racist and degrading.

Most people where I live just drive like assholes, no matter their race or age.

Quoting mommy2b39465:

but that's why it's so funny! like 95% of the time, DH is right when looking at traffic! He's got it broken into younger, middle age, and older people, then into white, black and hispanic. The only thing that usually throws him off is cell phones. A person on a cell phone drives bad no matter how old or what race they are. It is crazy how dead on he is, lol.

It's not that all people of a certain race drive badly, per se, it's just little characteristics in how they move their car, how close or how far they follow other cars into an intersection, whether they're willing to cross over a road line to make a more straight shot in a turn, whether they tap on the brakes a lot or a little, all sorts of things, that could easily be passed on as parents are teaching their children to drive, or picked up from watching parents or friends drive. An old person is the easiest, they are the one tapping on the brakes, driving 10 miles under the speed limit with a line of cars behind them, lol. That, or (and let your racism bashing commence with this one), middle aged mexican guys with like 7 people sitting on a bench seat meant for 3. For some reason, they tend to drive very slowly too.  ;p

Relax, put the claws back in, ok? It's just a silly game to pass the time sitting at a long red light. If you want to see the truly racist people, go to an old, failing church where all the members are over 70. Then, you still can see that old hate going strong. This silly game is just child's play compared to that. Shouldn't even rate on the racist-ometer.

Quoting happymommy1105:

I have to disagree. It's only as racist as you make it. Cultures haven't fully merged anywhere. There are problems everywhere.

But the statement that you can tell by driving habits, house decorations etc. It is just ridiculous.

Not only does it make you and your husband look and sound racist. To make blanket statements like that, make everybody who lives here sound the same.

Quoting mommy2b39465:

I know this probably was what people read into it, but really I agree with you completely. Unless you get into the elderly generation as a whole, life is very integrated. Churches are interracial except for the traditionals, there are interracial marriages, everyone gets along. There are the assholes here and there, lol.

However, all I'm saying is that, cultures haven't really merged yet here. From little things like how we decorate our houses or landscape, to bigger things like how we talk or communicate. That doesn't mean we aren't friends, it's just that we come from different backgrounds.

Quoting happymommy1105:

I was born and raised in the south. I can't handle living anywhere else.

But I will say this, I have a multi racial family and do not have the experiences that op describes.

Where I live races interact and while there are traditionally white or black churches, we get along. Sure there is the occassional asshole but nothing to get your panties too twisted about.

I hate when people paint a racist picture of my home.

lol I meant to ask ele2837, b/c of how she says she talks fast. It reminds me of a time we went to a mardi gras parade and did a little video to that song, that was all sped up.  :)

song link!  :)

Quoting Christina1285:

haha i dont know who you are asking but i havnt heard it.

yea we are pretty fast talkers here in louisiana. also kinda fast paced.  i love it here. i always move away cause i always thought i hated it but i ALWAYS end up coming back so i must not hate it that bad

Quoting mommy2b39465:

hey just thought of this this morning: Have you ever heard the song 'Aint No Place to Pee on Mardi Gras Day'? I LOVE that song! I'd never really heard cajun songs until I moved down here, but they all seem to be very fast paced.

Quoting Christina1285:

Where in la? I'm in sulphur

Quoting ele2837:

I live in south Louisiana and we are a whole different breed of southerners. There sure as hell isn't anyone talking slow here. I love where I live. I have lived in a few other states and there is no other culture that can compare to Cajun Louisiana. However, I have a problem with the racisim that is still present here. It is disturbing that people can be so narrow minded.

oh come on! If you can't read the post without zeroing in on one thing you don't like, then forget it. The original reason for the post was to have fun. Except for YOU TWO, everyone seems to be having fun. Meeting a lot of new people that also live in the south, and conversing about how different or similar our states are. Sorry, but MS does have a racial background. You may sleep through black history month, but it's not a made up story. If you can't handle that too bad. Bah humbug to you too.

If you wanted to make a post about the south you could have left the racism out cause it not as bad in other parts of the south as you make it out to be.

no! Because I feel like that when you take the south, you can't just pick out all the good things and close your eyes to the bad. The South is an amazing, wonderful place to live. However, if you just cut out an entire part of it because you don't like it, you are disrespecting the people and history of the area.

Why would you think, from my edit, that the south is this terrible, hate filled place? I wrote the exact opposite! It's NOT like that anymore. I tried to explain how I see the current state of racism in my state, which has come SO FAR! My whole point was that now that the hate is gone, we're in a state of transition, where the two unique cultures are beginning to merge together to become one.

If you quit looking for a fight and being offended, you might see the awesome variances in culture around you. That's what makes each group unique!
