Prepaid phone plans

We are getting my oldest son a cell phone for Christmas. I wanted to add a line to our plan, but we have a smart phone plan, and he doesn't need a smart phone.

So, we are looking into prepaid style plans. I don't even know where to begin. I've never done the prepaid route.

Suggestions? I just want him to have a basic phone with talk and texting.

Verizon does unlimited for $50.... At least I think it's verizon.
Google prepaid phones and see which one suits you better.

DF and I have straight talk, it is prepaid with no contract. DF just has the basic flip phone that he can call and text and it has a small camera but the camera isn't good quality. We get him the $30 a month card which has 1000 mins, 1000 texts and 1000 data.

I have a smartphone with them and pay $45 a month for the unlimited card.

When I was a teenager I had a spare phone that was prepaid through tmobile that just went by a different amt of minutes for different prices, and I swear I paid more on minutes with that kind than when you are in a contract and have a plan. So I wouldn't get that kind, I would go with something like Straight Talk or Boost mobile.
