Drinking around your little ones?

My friend invited me to her friend's party this weekend and it was billed as a family affair since her son's birthday was Saturday - bring the kids and come have some good food and hang out, etc. Our kids are all between the ages of 2-5 so I knew they'd have fun but when I got there I noticed a lot of folks staggering around, slurring their words, and holding booze either in the original bottles and cans or in plastic cups. They were even laughing about spilling it on a 3yo there! I just don't think it funny that I was literally the only sober adult there. What do you think? Do you think it's okay to serve alcohol and get hammered with children present?

Getting completely drunk around small kids - No

But just generally having alcohol - no issue at all

Serve alcohol at a family get together? Yes, that's OK. All the adults get hammered at a family function? No, not ok.

i think its okay to drink. my parents did and i was well taken care of. however i went to a party like this and i didnt drink and pretty much stayed with the kids so they would be taken care of. they pretty much got locked into a trashed room and when i got there (i didnt bring my kids) the kids were basically starving and all the adults were too drunk to get them food. i stayed until i put the kids to bed and then left.

I won't get staggering drunk. But I'll enjoy a drink or two. I feel children should see GOOD examples of people drinking in moderation in comparison to the horrid drunks thats are featured on television to help show them that alcohol is not an inherit evil, but something that responsible adults gets to enjoy.

We drink around kids, but it's never more than two or three beers. We have NEVER been drunk around them.

Getting drunk, yes. Otherwise it's not a big deal.
