Does it have an expiration date?

Usually if it's past expiration, it's no good... the little organisms are no longer alive to eat and create co2.

The only way to tell is to proof it.  Dissolve it in a few tbslp of water, sprinkle of sugar & let it sit at room temp.  In 10 minutes or so it will get bubbly and foamy as the yeast starts to multiply. If it doesn't, it's no good.

I have proofed expired yeast before and it was fine.  But I've also found it to be dead, too.

I agree that the only way to find out is to proof it.  It will bubble if it's good.

In the future, keep all of your yeast in the freezer.  It will last forever that way.
