I'm super embarrassed to even ask. My husband was recently laid off and we lost our insurance. I am type one diabetic and have been for 16 years and am 26. I check my blood sugar 8 times a day due to the fact I can not tell when my BS is high or low. I have never had to worry about where my insulin or test strips come from till now and am freaking out. I have enough insulin for a few months but no strips. If any of you mommas have any extra strips or strips you don't use I would greatly appreciate them. When we get back on our feet ill happily re pay you from them. I feel horrible for asking! Thanks for reading ladies!

What kind of meter do you use?

I would look into medicaid, if you get approved the co-pay for a box of 100 is about $1 depending on brand!  When I was on medicaid I used a One Step meter and the 100 strips was a $1 co-pay!  Now without insurance or medicaid I buy the Target test strips and use their meter because a box of 50 is only $20.

Please check out Walmart's Relion meter and strips. For 100 test strips, they are roughly around $39 (I live in Los Angeles, so the price may vary). Walgreen's test strips are around $50 for 100 test strips.

I am so sorry for your losses. I do not know where you live, but here there are free or low-cost clinics and some of them give free medicine. I know this for a fact because six months ago, my husband's blood sugar reached 600 and we could not afford insulin. So the doctors at the free clinic gave him two vials and we had to go to Walmart to buy the syringes which were $12 for a box of 100 (with the very fine needles). The "con" of using a free clinic is the wait-sometimes you may have to wait all day even if you are the first one there. If you do decide to go this route, bring plenty of books or magazines to read, a lunch or a snack, plenty of patience, and prayer for strength.

I honestly know what you are going through.

Oh, another option. If there are any universities around you, they may see you for a small fee or for free.

Things may seem hopeless, but there are options-some of them you may not like, but there are options. Please do you research, keep reaching out, and do not give up. Something will come through for you and your family.

Thank you ladies for all the information!! I've contacted our local free clinics but none have test strips. I did apply for state insurance but it's pending approval. Indeed it is stressful and seems way overwhelming but I know its just temporary and things will get better and soon he will be back to work and have insurance. Thank u again ladies!

I'm in the exact same boat! Its ridiculous how expensive those things are! As bad as this may sound, you might want to let your BS run a little on the higher side for a while if you've acquired hypoglycemic unawareness because of reoccuring low blood sugars. The ability to tell the difference comes back if you go without having one for a while, and running a high blood sugar is not as bad as an extremely low one. Like I said, it sounds bad but it might be the best option in a bad situation. Unless you're saying you could never differenciate.
