I think I have this because my morning blood sugars are usually well over 150 even though I've taken them in the middle of the night and they were as low as 87. It's SO frustrating for me because my dr's advice is to take more insulin, which gives me several low blood sugar episodes during the day and it doesn't work to keep my morning blood sugar readings down.
Has anyone else experienced this? How do you/your doctor treat it?

Being on the pump will solve that problem. Because then you can adjust your basal rate to be higher during the hours that your blood sugar is going up. It's really the only thing that can take care of that particular problem.
Darn. I don't have a pump and I'm hoping to get off insulin completely in the next few months, but this ONE thing drives my doctor nuts.

Yes that has been happening to me,my sugar at night are in the 50's and 60's and when i visit his office and her order a AC1,I tell him that it will come high becaause at night and sometimes in the day my sugars are low,so i carry peppermint candies for just this sort of happens, and he just like does care, for my AC1 does comes back high, instead of looking at his computer under my file,he just tells his nurse to call me and advises me to also take more insulin. I have learned to adjust my insulin on my own to avoid my low blood sugar, both day and night, for i hate to get a low blood at night and not wake up or while driving have a accident and be responsible for injurying someone.I have made a point to check my blood during my low blood sugars and then constantly while I am trying to get my sugar up,so that when i go see him,i take my meter with me and show him, just how low they get, then tell what I have been doing to avoid this again THEN PLACE THE BALL ON HIS COURT AND SEE WHAT HE WILL DO, so far he has lowered my insulin some, but am still having low blood sugars, and still doing my thing with the insulin
How late at night are you eating, and what kind of thing do you eat last in the evening? It may be that making some diet adjustments may help. Just a thought!

I might have a snack just before bedtime, between 10:30 and 11 p.m. Depending on what my bedtime reading is, it's an apple & peanut butter if my blood sugar is lower than 140, or a boiled egg & pickle if it's higher than 150, or nothing if it's above 180.

Okay.
I cut back my insulin last night, had a hard boiled egg and a Paleo waffle (1/2) with peanut butter spread on it.
My bedtime blood sugar was 139, my morning blood sugar was 134.
I'm still thinking that the insulin is contributing to it. We shall see what happens...
Hi, Rhonda,
I am Type II diabetic.
My doctor has always advised me to stop eating at 8:00 pm. As long as I follow that rule, I never get in serious trouble...
My nightime eating always gets me in trouble and will continue to do so until I stop !!!!!
I do not eat between meals, and my midday/afternoon sugar levels are always super, because in the morning I would have taken all my meds, long term insulin and the first dose of fast-acting insulin. (I take after all three meals). It is 18, 18, 13 units.
I have a very bad habit also of getting so busy I do not eat until 4: 00 pm or 5:00 pm., or even later...
Once my sugar went down to 46-I checked it at 7:00 pm. (At 12:00 pm. that day I had what I thought I was a decent meal of meat, corn on the cob, potato and cabbage, in a soup.). I also took my fast acting insulin.
I SHOULD have been in a coma. I did not feel badly. I took the level again-It was 54...Then I started to sweat from the shock of seeing the numbers. :)
Anyway, I have always been told the morning sugar level is the most reliable. Ideally it should be between 80 and 110....Consistently- at all times during the day.
If it isn't-That is an excellent time to look at Carb intake.
For me it has made all the difference in the world!!!!
Take care, Mama.
I hope you can get this problem straightend out.

I eat very low carb to low carb...usually nothing more than 60 carbs a day.
I do not always eat after our 6 p.m. dinner...only if I didn't eat enough protein or fat and feel absolutely starving.
Doesn't matter if I eat before bed or not, my blood sugars always take a dive between 3 and 4 a.m. (down to 70's) then it's back up 100 points or more by breakfast.
I'm wondering if I should talk to the doctor about taking my Lantus insulin in the morning instead of the evenings. Gah! I'd much rather deal with short-acting insulin....it's easier to calculate doses.
Low blood sugars: My mom had a reading of 17 one morning a few weeks ago. It's very scary.
