Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders
Hello ~
I just wanted to see if anyone else's child has a lot of body jerks or moments where it seems like their limbs are moving of their own accord? This has been happening a lot recently and my daughter's Lamictal meds did just increase but I don't know if its related. It makes it tough to sleep without worrying.

by blessedwith12 on Sep. 1, 2008 at 10:22 PMIs she having single myclonic jerks? Does she make a small noise at the same time? We have seen Ben do things like that - and especially he does seem stirred up when we change his meds. Do her feet "pedal" or do her hands tend to clench ahead of time? We have experienced those also. |

Like his hands will just get tight for a second, then relax, then 5 seconds later tight, then relax, until he is asleep. Is this a kind of seizure? I know that he is sound asleep when the clenching stops. |

by starlight211984 on Sep. 2, 2008 at 7:15 AMIt very well could be I know when my daughter was having seizures all the time that was one thing we noticed, but then again EVERYONE twitches when they are falling asleep, everyone.I have never had seizure in my life but i twitch to. I would call her doctor and maybe ask for an EEG. my daughter was also at risk for status Epilepticus because of how bad she got. we are also giveing Haley Lamictal and now two other meds. hope you get it figered out. |

by morganna713 on Sep. 2, 2008 at 8:20 PMThanks so much for all your input ladies. I'm new to the 'bigger' seizure thing. She has had petit mals up until this summer and then she had one tonic. So I'm still not sleeping well. =) I don't think she is making any noises...but in general her movements are sort of shaky and jerky to begin with and I always thought it was from the medicine. It's not outright noticable until she tries to do something that requires fine motor skill and then if you aren't aware of it, it just looks like she's trying too hard or too hastily and is clumsy. When she sleeps at times her arms or legs will just jerk all of a sudden but she stays asleep. They might not even be large movements, just minor little ones and sometimes I keep one hand on her back for a while as I fall asleep and I can feel them. I suppose I should relax because me worrying isn't going to help but whew!!! Tough, isn't it??

by crazymom38 on Sep. 3, 2008 at 10:26 PMMy daughter also does this. I really don't understand all the seizures. Shannon had seizure like activity since she was two or three. She had these rages and would speak in a clear deep voice for and hour or two then fall asleep, or just collapse and eyes roll back in head. Both of these ended in her sleeping. The neuro then said that she wasn't having seizures by the EEG, it was normal but slow. Shannon went on to have a grand mal in the middle of a birthday party and they almost lost her. She was placed on meds since then. About a yr ago she was taken off of meds and told that she again wasn't having seizures (new neuro since the other one moved) Within a couple of weeks she went from a complex partial to a grand mal in the middle of a store. Again she was taken by ambulance and our local hospital made the childrens hosp put her back on meds. This new doctor they placed us with said that all the things that she had been doing WERE seizures and that the activity is probably just occuring deeper in the brain is why the EEG is not picking it up. He said that most of her problems are comming from the frontal lobe (were she had a brain hemagioma at 6months) and her temporal lobe. They had me call and check in with them today because of the increase in seizures lately. I told them that Saturday she had an absence seizure ending with her wetting on herself. When she got home her arm was jerking in her sleep. Is this normal? I again noticed Sunday after church that she was very irritable and made her take a nap. While sleeping her arm came up a couple of times and jerked for about 30 secs and dropped. Is this normal? She said that it sounded like seizure activity. Since then she has had migraines the last two days at school. Could the rain be causing the increase in activity ( alot of rain and heavy winds since Gustav has been sitting over us for the last couple of day.) Shannon takes Carbatrol and Topamax for her seizures. I understand your worry. Shannon has been sleeping in my room on my sofa for the last few nights because I to don't feel comfortable with her out of my sight. Again, the first doctor when she was little said that the jerking movement when she slept wasn't seizure activity, but the doctor now says it is. I'm curious what the other doctors are saying. |

by MichelleBelle1 on Sep. 4, 2008 at 3:19 PMHi! My son also jerks and twitches in his sleep. Sometimes so bad that he sits straight up and then falls back. I was concerned and thought maybe he was having Myoclonic seizures. I called his Neuroligist and he stated that if he was jerking and twitching while fully awake and alert then that would be considered a Myoclonic seizure. If it is while he's sleeping, then that is normal activity. Hope this helps. Michelle |

by SarahBethK on Sep. 23, 2008 at 4:24 PMSometimes I jerk i my sleep when I dream. Like, I dreamed I was walking along and fell off of a curb and jerked in real life when I fell. Is it maybe just because of a dream? |
