My first ob appointment is schedule for tomorrow morning and I am six weeks and three days. I am kind of anxious about it. How will they check the baby's heartbeat by doppler or ultrasound. When did you hear your baby's heartbeat and by what?
I went in when I was 9 weeks and they weren't planning on even trying to hear the heartbeat. The nurse practitioner said it was too early to catch on a doppler. I begged her and she did try but we couldn't hear anything. She ended up giving me a quick unofficial ultrasound just to put my mind at ease. Even at my 12 week appointment the doppler didn't pick up the heartbeat. My doctor also gave me a quick unofficial ultrasound for my sanity. So if they don't plan on trying, you can ask and see if they will. But don't be discouraged if they can't pick up the heartbeat. I think 6 weeks might be too early to hear. Good luck!

Chances are they may not even try to hear the baby's heartbeat. It is too early to hear it by doppler and sometimes not noticeable on ultrasound until 7 weeks. It has been my experience that unless there is a medical reason for an ultrasound (i.e. complications, questioning gestation due to irregular periods, etc.) a practitioner won't order one. With my first pregnancy, I had to wait till my 2nd appt. to hear the baby's heartbeat and same with my second. With this pregnancy, they performed an ultrasound at 7 weeks and we were able to see/hear the heart beat. Best of luck!
I was on the pill when I found out I was pregnant so they couldn't go by my LMP to determine how far along I was. They did an u/s at my first appt. and could only see a yolk sac, I was told I was maybe 4-5wks. I had another one 10days later and they saw a yolk sac and fetal pole, still no heartbeat. Another 10 days we finally saw the heartbeat on the u/s. At 10wks we were able to hear the heartbeat with the doppler. My OB doesn't even try to use a doppler until after 10wks. Early u/s are standard with my OB to try to accurately date a pregnancy, but every office is different so yours may or may not do the same. Good luck and congrats!!! =)
