Pregnancy
I was just wondering if it is routine to be tested for cystic fibrosis during pregnancy? My doctor sent me to get blood drawn for this test today and it kinda scares me. If it's not routine, then I don't know why he would send me for this test because no one in my family has ever had it. Thanks in advance for your responses.

by chairhead28 on Sep. 4, 2008 at 11:33 PMI got all the blood work done with my son (he'll be 16 months in 30 minutes!!) when I was pregnant with him and at the time, insurance and everything covered it. This time around, I requested not to have all the blood work done (to check for downs and other abnormalities) and they asked if I wanted the CF test done. Apparently, since so many babies are born with it now, insurance DOES NOT cover it (at least here in NC that's what my doctor told me) and the only reason I can think is so they can make more money on the test. No one in my family or DH's family has it, so we opted not to get it. I'm pretty sure it's routine, it's in with all the other testings. You do NOT have to get the test though if you don't want. There are A LOT of false positives that make people worry so much, then have a 2nd level ultrasound done, and their baby (babies) are fine.

by mrsmorrissey04 on Sep. 4, 2008 at 11:59 PMthe test for CF is usually routine. However once you have been tested once there is no reason to be tested again. they wont test your hubby unless you come up positive. its a very good test to have done. that way they know if your baby will have it an have everything ready at birth. its nothing to be scared of. its just really good to find out.

by Mamaz on Sep. 5, 2008 at 12:35 AMi think it;s routine. don;t worry if no one else in your family has had it. my best friend has it, so we talk about it a lot. if you were carrying the gene for it. you would know!! so many people are carriers that if your family passed that gene down, the disease itself would be popping up all over your family tree. |

Yes it is routine. If you came back a carrier they would then want to test your partner ( both partners have to be carriers for it to be transferred to the baby). However if you have ever been tested for it once and find you are not a carrier you never have to be tested again.

by mommy_2_1_now on Sep. 5, 2008 at 2:09 AMthey gave me the choice to have it done and since it is like 400-500 without the insurance paying for it I DID NOT get it done!
