I was told by my DR to start them up to 3 months before ttc. It helps get your body ready to get pregnant.

My friend is a nurse - she said to start taking folic acid now because it helps with early fetal developement...so I just picked up a prenatal vitamin at the grocery store that also had folic acid in it already

I am a nurse and this is true.  My doctor told me to start taking them 6 months ago knowing I wan't going to be actively trying until this spring.  She said to take a 1mg folic acid which I was unable to find but I do take 800mcg folic acid and any OTC prenatal vitamin should suffice.  The purpose for folic acid is because being deficient in it can lead to neural tube defects such as spina bifida

It's true.  Folic Acid helps prevent neural tube defect, which actually forms before some peope realize they are pregnant...so it's good to have it stored up in your system.  The other thing is that I've heard that there is a chance it helps prevent nausea....hasn't worked for me, but you never know :)

Absolutly Correct 3-6 months before TTC or atleast the month you start. GL MOMMA

My doc told me it's best to start prenates a year before ttc.  I wasn't prescribed any till August, and we've been ttc since july, but so far it's been 8 months, so it's definitely in my system now.  As soon as you think you may want to ttc, it's best to get on them!
