We decided it's time to take the next step...testing. What can I expect?

Quick back story: I was on BC for 10 years. Went off in March 2009 started "trying" in September 2009 and have been "trying" on/off since with approx 15 cycles of actual "trying". I had some blood tests done for progesterone, thyroid and prolactin...all came back normal. The doc said we will wait a few more months and if not pregnant will go to the next step which is testing sperm. I called the doc yesterday and am waiting to hear back from her. What happens now? Does my Gyno order the sperm testing or do we have to seek out another doc? What tests will DH have to get besdies testing sperm? What happens if sperm test come back  abnormal...is there a pill that men can take? Or is IUI or IVF our only option to have a bio child? If he's fine then what test will they have me take next?

I do not feel good about it this at all. It's very frustrating for me that something that should be so simple is now so complicated. I have waited to start further testing because I just didn't want accept that something could be wrong. I don't want getting pregnant to be a stressful time I just wanted to have fun trying and BOOM end up pregnant. When I called the doc and told the nurse the situation she took my info and said she would have the doc get back to me and I started crying before the call ended because all of the sudden it became real to me that we are an infertile couple. I really don't know how I will deal with the next few months and all of the tests, and news that is to come.

your ob should be able to give you the orders for you dh to get a (SA) sperm analysis. Then he will go to a lab or the local hospital to give his sample. When the SA results come back your ob will over look it and if there is something wrong he/she will refer your dh to a urologist.  if a man has a low count there could be a number of problems and it would be up to the urologist to do test and find out what is wrong and if it can be fixed with medications. But I would not worry to much about any of that unless the test does come back with low sperm count. In the meantime I would suggest reading a book about infertility "I suggest the book Taking Charge of your Fertility, or another book about fertility" Also I don't know if you have ever tracked your cycle with BBT chart's or OPK's but i would highly suggest doing that for a month or two and if you don't get pg then you will have charts to take to your doctor when you go in. good luck and If you have any questions feel free to message me.

i'm curious why they didn't just automatically do a sperm exam with your's to rule that out automatically.

It seems like they are wasting your time, you might want to find a specialist who will do all the generic testing to rule things out - and not wasting your time by checking something months later that might be the problem.

I have not been charting but I think you are right and it's probably best to start now so that I have that. Thanks for all the info...it makes me feel a little better to know a little more about the process :)

No I didn't have that done. When I had the blood work done she said if it came back normal she wanted to test DH first before having me do the HSG test. She said it's not painful but it's uncomfortable and that she didn't want to put me through it if she didn't have to.

Aww... I am so happy that even though you had bad news you ended up with your baby!! I am hoping that we have the same end result!! Trying to think only postive thoughts!! We will have answers for both tests by the end of June. Nervous but happy to finally get this solved :)
