experienced moms please read...i need your help with my newborn. *kinda long*

okay so im going to try and make this short as possible. but it's kind of a long story.

my newborn was originally on enfamil newborn formula. after being a couple days old the hospital changed his formula to enfamil gentle ease because it seemd he had a sensitive stomach and was spitting up.

when we came home from the hospital we bought the powder enfamil gentle ease he was on liquid and him spitting up still continued. we tried warming his milk instead of it being room temperature but it did not help at all. he was on gentle ease powder for about a week because the nurse told me it takes about three days for new formula to effect his system and start working.

well my breast milk came in and i fed it to him thru bottle and he still spat up a lot. it was just more watery. i was told it was okay to feed him breast milk and formula at the same time like i could switch it up so that's kinda what i did.

i burp him before his feedings, during his feedings, and after. i keep him sat up about 30 minutes after his feedings and he still spit up his whole bottle it seemed. at least half of it. i feed him two ounces every three hours because that's what i was told. he would spit up what looked like a straight up milk fountain from his nouse and mouth at the same time. especially when i layed him down no matter how long after i sat him up for after him eating.

i called the hospital nursery twice, told my dr at his first appointment. and they just kept telling me i was over feeding him. which i know is not the case because they told me to feed him the amount i was already feeding him! i have been around plenty of babies throughout my life and i have never seen a baby spit up as much as him. i dont know if i would consider it spitting up or throwing up. but either way it was seemed pretty bad. his dad told me he never spit up that much when he fed him but i know i was feeding him the same amount and did the same everything when i fed him so i just don't understand.

my newborn spat up/threw up constantly after eating sometimes as soon after or even an hour after eating it just varied. a couple times it was so bad he literally spit up every 15 minutes through the whole day. i felt so bad for him i decided to take matters into my own hand and i changed his formula once again. i changed it to soy liquid. he has been on soy liquid for two days now and he has barely spit up. he seems more satisfied and he is keeping down so well. the only problem is he's barely had a poopy diaper since he's been on it but he's had a TON of wet diapers. do soy fed babies not poop as much as normal formula fed babies? i asked a friend of mine whose baby is soy fed and she said her baby only poops like twice a week. and she is powder soy fed.

i called the nursery this morning i couldn't call the doctors cause it's saturday. i'm concerned he's not pooping as much as he should so i talked to the nurse and she basically bitched me out for changing him to soy without consulting his dr. i do feel bad for doing it but when you have a baby that is constantly spitting up or throwing up almost his whole bottle and he's constantly hungry cause he has nothing in his stomach i felt horrible as a mother and kinda panicked and that's when i decided to give him soy.

anyways...to end this post i was just wanting to know if you all think did i do the right thing or what should i do? i'm going to consult his dr on monday. well at least the dr's nurse. thanks.

My son was diagnosed at ten days old that he had acid reflux. Dr put him on meds and it stopped. Push for an upper gi, it will not hurt him and you will get answers. I cried for the first week because he spit up breast milk which is odd. I also fed him very thinned out oatmeal cereal mixed with breast milk so it would weigh down the milk. Go with your intuition not what a dr tells you. Good luck

Ok, this sounds exactly like me with my second child.  In the hospital I noticed that he was spitting up more than i remembered my oldest doing and I thoguht it was strange.  So I consulted the nurses and they agreed after 2 days that I could switch to Similac sensitive.

The next day we took him home and he was still spitting up a lot and seemed to have a lot of gas, but I though he was just adjusting.  Later that week I took him to his first pedi appt and my doc didn't share my feelings that there was something still wrong.  He would writhe at night because of the gas, it hurt it poor tummy and no one believed me!

The very next week I went to my mother in laws for the week to visit with her.  She told me that her son, my husband, had had a problem like this.  Turned out he was lactose intolerant.  So that very next day I switched him to soy and he didn't spit up!  The next day he was even better.  He slept sounder and didn't fuss so much during the day.  I told my pedi that I changed it and she gave me the 5th degree because I didn't consult her.  But I told her that I knew something wasn't right and she gave into me.  She even saw the difference.

My little soy baby is 2 now and is still unable to drink milk or eat icecream.  He can however eat some milk products such as cheese and yogurt now.  So the moral of the story is....do what you feel is right.  You are the mom here, and you know your baby best.

First off its not right of the nurse to chew you out over the formula, especially if its helping. Its not up to doctors what formula you use, they can make recommendations but you choice, otherwise we would be forced to pay the most expensive all the time. Talk to your doctor ( in an appointment not just nurse on phone) and go through the whole story.

Soy babies do tend to poop less. Sounds like your may have a very low tolerance for lactose. I got 2 with low tolerance. It could also be reflux. Keep a record of feeding, diapers and spit ups. And if you feel like the doctor isn't listening, get pushy. If you can't be push find someone close that can and will.

My girls done that. They were allergic to milk, soy, and breastmilk. My doc put them on a formula called nutramigin. Its expensive but if you are on wic they will cover it with a docs orders. It made all the spitting up stop. The only thing that really helped them. Good luck!

Try putting light karo syrup in his bottles, a tsp til he poops, sounds like he is constapated from the switch, I think you did fine with switching him, try that if he still hasn't pooped in a week take him in to figure out why...good luck hope this helps

Yeah soy makes them poop less. Karo syrup works well. My son had the same issue, he was on soy formula..then lactose free milk

I didn't read the whole thing, but from the spitting up it sounds like your little one might have reflux. My last baby just turned 1 in February, and she was diagnosed with reflux at 3 months. She started spitting up at a little over a month, and we tried every formula possible, and they didn't work. Finally I took her to a GI specialist, with her doctor's recommendation. He said that some babies just have reflux and will grow out of it as they get older. She stopped spitting up at 10 months.

I would suggest that you just keep her pediatrician informed, and keep going back until they recommend a specialist.
