What is considered "Long Term TTC"?

I have been trying to get pregnant for 2.5 years, first with my ex husband, now with my husband. I never considered myself as a long term TTC-er...until know...

I keep seeing posts of people that have been TTC for 6 months, sometimes less, and getting discouraged. I don't want to discredit their emotions and frustration...but sometimes I just want to slap them and say "Come talk to me in two years with no baby, and we'll see how you feel." (Note: I don't say this. I know there is no quantifying the pain of TTC.)

Anyway...I was wondering what, technically, qualifies as "long term TTC"?

Technically it's TTC for more than 12 cycles when you're under 35 and TTC for 6 cycles if you're over 35.

I've actually been infertile since 2006, maybe even my whole life I'll never really know because I was barely sexually active as a teen. So when I started TTC in 2010 I really should have gone straight a fertility clinic, but I had no health insurance so that stalled things out for a year. Then I was diagnosed with PCOS in June 2011 and it's been an emotionally stressful time for me as I come to grips with my infertility, the fact that doctors are still hesitant to give me fertility drugs (my first RE refused to even give me Provera), and the fact that my family won't come about during the time frame I had in mind and even though, like I've said, my baby factory has been malfunctioning since 2006 the day to day struggle is enormous. Yes, I've been to counseling and tried anti-depressent meds which weren't for me.

I'm about to be 24 years old and it's hard being in your early 20's trying to get any doctor to listen to you about menstrual issues. I went to 10 different doctors from 2006-2011 who said at my age it was normal to skip two or three periods a year. When I told them I'm not having period for one to two years I was immediately brushed off and called a liar. That's why it took so long for me to get diagnosed with PCOS because I went to a bunch of OBGYNs and regular MDs who just didn't know what they were talking about.

I'm now in the hands of a RE who specializes in PCOS so I feel much better about my journey. I've dropped 50+ pounds since November 2011 by taking Metformin and birth control pills and I've heard if I come off my BC pills my body could try to ovulate. I'm not ready for that yet because like I've said the emotional stress from confirming that I'm infertile has been powerful. Not to mention my husband and I tried to conceive for 18 months with 3 medicated (Clomid) cycles and even getting Clomid was like pulling teeth back in 2010 from an OBGYN who said I didn't have PCOS because I'm not hairy.

Hi there, I just wondered what bc you were using to get cysts. I was on depot for 3 years on and off. When i came off depot and started ttc it took over a year to get my periods back. Then when we had fertility tests done they told me I had polycystic ovaries. Could they have been a result of taking depot? I have now been ttc for 3 and 1/2 years, lost 28lbs, had 2 cycles of iui and starting IVF with my next cycle which is due in about 8 days. I've never even thought that the bc could have caused this, if I'd have known I would never have used it.

I was on lo-ovaral (spelling?) for a while, then Microgestin. They were horrible, but they didn't give me PSOC. I have follicular cysts, but not PCOS it's a huge difference.

Depo probably isn't to blame for your issues, but it can't have helped.

Good luck and baby dust!

I am just curious.. (as you, not to discredit emotions..) What routes are you taking while TTC? At home through natural intercourse? At home using a cup of some sort to hold the sperm in? At home, sex, fertility meds? At a Clinic, fertility meds, IUI? At a Clinic, fertility meds, IVF? Have you had any testing done (blood tests, ultrasounds, dye tests...)??

I am just curious.. because with each next step the chances are increased.. or potential problems are found and possibly corrected..

We went straight to IUI because we are using donor sperm and wanted our best chances (other than doing it at home) and have done 3 now, with fertilty meds, and still nothing.. this during 5 cycles of meds.. even on the meds, I didn't ovulate 2 consecutive cycles.. it's very frustrating to go through all that with the meds, and a horrible emotional roller coaster because of the meds, and then to have a huge let down..

Time wise, I can't understand.. at least not at this point.. but I DO understand the hope of success and just getting that BFN or AF or not even being able to try that cycle because follicles withdrew and no ovulation! It gets harder and harder to stay positive..

I DID just get an HSG test done and fallopian tubes are open! So that makes me a bit more hopeful to try again.. :-)

Do you mind if I ask you how much you weighed before TTC?  Do you really feel the weightloss helped?

Weightloss did help. It made my AF regular. A 28 day cycle! I waited a 4 months to make sure it was staying the same an it did.
