semen analysis question

So DF finally had his SA done. His pH is high (8.5) and his motility is low....which may be caused by the high pH because adnormal pH can actually kill sperm. Does anyone know what causes a high seminal fluid pH? Or what can DF do to get it in the normal range??? Thanks ladies! :-)

I have no idea! I always thought it could he controlled by diet and weight loss (if needed). Maybe certain medications he's on?

Here's a bump so hopefully you get some answers! :)

Vitamin c or onions will lower the ph.

Hhmmm, thanks ladies. His doc told him to start taking a multivitamin and get retested in 3 weeks, so hopefully that will help the situation???

3 weeks seems like a short time - but maybe ph levels & motility can improve that quickly.  It takes 90 days to generate new sperm, so you don't really see an improvement with most sperm issues for at least 90 days.

My husband's semen pH is also 8.5 and has stayed consistent for over a year, even with taking a daily multi-vitamin. While researching on the internet, I've learned that a pH of 8.5 actually is fairly common.
My husband started taking L-Carnitine, which is a supplement that helps the sperm metabolize energy, meaning it aids their motility. After 2 years of ttc, we got pregnant the month he started taking it. But sadly, miscarried. We definitely agree that he will continue taking it, we believe that it helped us conceive.

Thanks and sorry for your loss. :-( We'll see what his next SA results are, and if it's still the same, I'll talk to DF about the L-Carnitine.

Not trying to be rude but how can it take 90 days to generate new sperm? They say there are new sperm within 24 hrs of ejaculation....otherwise it would take us 3 month untravels to try and get pregnant......

Sorry, its not 90 days (which is what I'd always heard), it takes 65-74 days to grow sperm. See this link.  So if you are trying to improve your sperm count, its going to take 65-74 days to really see an improvement.
