AFP results.... anyone??

I got a call from my ob to come in and discuss my AFP test results, so I did and my ob told me that he was transferring me to a high risk specialist and that I have a 1 in 4 chance of a baby born with down syndrome. I'm very shocked to say the least, I have no clue about down syndrome but I do know I am going to refuse the amnio bc we tried so hard for this baby and I'm not willing to take any risks whatsoever. We will love this baby immensely no matter what! Just curious has anyone had results like this??

You have this issue with your other kid?  Hopefully your baby comes out perfectly healthy.

No I have two other children and never had anything like this happen. Down syndrome does not run in my family nor my husbands but I've heard its not hereditary anyways.
And thank you!!

How strange. you don't look old enough to have those issues either. Idk. That's strange. hopefully it was just a mistake.

The AFP test sucks and is wrong at least half the time. I never do the AFP test I don't want to stress over a test that has such a high rate of being wrong. A friend of mine at the age of 23 had that test done her Dr told her that the test said she was at higher risk then a 45 year old women. The Dr even told her of states should could go to in order end her pg. She was beside herself with worry. So she did the amino and guess what everything came back fine. She now has a healthy four year old little girl.

They told my mom that my little sis had down syndrome and spinal bifida (sp) they said she wouldnt live past 2 yrs old and suggested my mom have an abortion. My sister was perfectly healthy. Doctors can't play God.

Downs don't run in familys... but you should get the amnio cuz if there is something wrong the dr needs to kniw at birth so they can be prepaired for special delivery or treatment uf needed..

They will probably follow you more closely with ultrasound so as to be prepared at birth. But as many have said, this test is notoriously known for being innacurate. And I agree with you mama, all babies are blessings!!!
