I would like to join this group. I got bashed at one of my other groups because I make my 6 kids help dh and i do farm chores without getting payed for it. I guess i would like some country moms to give me their opinion on it. Maybe you all will understand better. So do you all think it is wrong not to pay my kids to help with the chores?

Need more info here.
Do your children have to work outside the home and pay you half for utilities and rent?  No don't think so.  They are getting roof over they're heads and food to eat and love unconditionally.  There is nothing wrong with involving them in the everyday chores and responsibilites with the home.  I believe that if children are more involved at home,  less are likely to be out getting into trouble and doing drugs and such.  Sometimes our kids have too much time on their hands and in helping out,  you are teaching them that life is what we make it.  And hard work is needed.  We all have to learn that life is not handed to us on a silver platter.  And they will learn about you and become your friend as well as your child.  Keep teaching your children by having them working beside you.  As they get older you can reward them with things they want to do,  by helping you they will earn those things they want.  Good parenting mom.  Those who bashed you will be on here whining in a couple of years,  saying where did I go wrong?

No they are ranging from the ages of 10 down to 2 And when we sell the meat we always buy them a little something. We do not have a huge farm just 3 dogs 8 cats 4 pigs and three calves.

My 2 sisters and I ahd farm chores growing up and didn't get paid. I don't pay my kids for loading the dishwasher or cleaning their rooms either! You live here - you are a part of the work it takes to run our lives. period. Extra, on top things like painting Grandma's fence you might get paid for.

Welcome to the group! I hope you enjoy it here!

You got bashed by a group here on CafeMom for teaching your children about responsibility?  WHAT ON EARTH is the world coming to?

I don't get paid for being a wife, mother, and cook, maid, stall cleaner, grocery getter, etc....

What gives?  I have half a mind to ask which group this is....but I won't.  I'd be willing to be they are all under 25 years old and haven't a clue what life is about.

Okay.  Stepping off my soap box now.

Welcome to the group.  I look forward to getting to know you.

I totally agree!  My kids are still too little to do any chores (22 months and 5.5 months)  but I intend for them to help out once they are big enough.  I think responsibilites promote self-esteem and not everything is an optional "I'll do it if you pay me" scenario.  Especially on a farm.  I think the self-reliance they learn from having responsibilities that are "real"; that are "needed", makes them feel special and important and a part of something bigger than themselves, namely FAMILY.

Hi Momma!

I completely agree with you. My son started helping with the chores when he was two. His payment is that he gets to eat our fresh eggs, chicken and beef. He has horses to ride, goats to play with, plenty of room to run and a family that loves him. What more can he possibly need?

Forget what foolish people say, they have lost touch with what is really important. We can hope that they find their way again, but just know that you are on the right path for your family.

Welcome to the group!

I truly think that's what's wrong with families these days. they have NO responsibility and when it comes time for them to be on their own, they can't.

I firmly believe that chores are a family affair. And not just the cattle chores but the household chores, too! When I o out and feed the orses and bulls, bottle feed the calves and the other outside chores, my ten month old and 2.5 year old go with. Granted they don't help, but they are there and will learn these things.

mt 2.5 year old has 'chores' like going potty, picking up her toys, playing quietly with her sister, etc. These things will only help her in the future!

You're doing a great job, Momma!!
