Hi everyone!  I was just wondering if any of you have ever heard or used what they call a Miracle Belt.  It is a weighted belt that children wear to help them stay calm and focus.  It is for children with ADHD, Autism amongst many other disorders.  My ex sent me the link to the website and it sounded a little phony, and he never researches anything first he just wants to get it.  Even though he has consistently told me over and over that my son doesn't have ADHD, but that I don't discipline him enough.  Sorry having a moment! Anyway if anyone can help me with my question I would appreciate it.

Thank You!!!thank you

A weighted belt is supposed to work similarly to a weighted vest or blanket that is used for children who have sensory integration difficulties.  Many children with autism or ADHD have regulatory difficulties.  The idea of the weighted stuff is to send information (specifically - proprioceptive/deep pressure input) to the central nervous system via the proprioceptive receptors that are found in the muscles and joints.  Proprioceptive input can stimulate the secretion of serotonin.  The deep pressure has a calming/organizing affect on a person via their central nervous system.  I would suggest consulting with an occupational therapist(OT) regarding the use of weighted equipment to make sure that it is appropriate (both size, fit, and treatment wise) for your son.  There are also wearing instructions and things to watch out for that you can be instructed on.

I hope this helps.  Your son's school should have an OT that you can speak with.  If not, your Dr. can help you locate an OT in your area.
