Are you doing it yourself?  In the salon, you do it at the same time.  Honestly, if you are doing it yourself from the drugstore, I don't know what to tell you because I don't know anything about those products and how they work together.  Is your hair natural (no chemicals) right now? Is your hair currently darker than the light brown you are seeking?  You have to take all of that into consideration when choosing a color.  Would you use bleach to do the highlights?  Sorry so many questions, just trying to help.  I do hair for a living so if you have any questions, let me know.

do you currently have color treated hair? if so, you will have to consider this in coloring your hair again. if its darker, by chemical, you will have to lighten it overall in order to achieve a light brown. best left up to the professional in a reputable salon. if you have natural hair, no chemically colored hair, there  are also factors to consider in choosing the proper color.
you can HLite at the same time. its a little tricky, but can be done. if you're 'color free', color your hair whatever color you choose(light brown). then, with a HL kit (probably from the same store you bought your homecolor) you can paint the HLs on, pull them through a cap, etc. there are many ways to highlight; just remember, if in doubt, just do a little amount. a few strand around  your hairline/bang is all you need, if you're a novice. also, you can always do more next time. less is more! tell us more details, and we can help you more in depth.

I would really suggest going to a salon for the highlights. I fried my hair doing blonde highlights at home. My hair is gross now! If you want to do an all over color from a box Loreal Excellence is really good.

Hello -- you want to go light brown and blonde highlights..well I think you should save money and go to salon....because you can not color hair with color color does not lift color..make sense? because your hair is dk brown right now...you can not get it any lighter unless you use bleach...because you said you colored it...if it was natural then you could use lighter color on it...and as for using mahogany..you take the chance when doing it at home coming out with some pinkish red highlights.......and no matter what time you dyed it the chemical is still there and it will be until you cut it .....the chemical NEVER goes away ..even if color seems to wash out....so yes I would suggest go to a salon and ask for 2 tone weave they can do at same time....good luck...
