If my children started in public school, how do I get copies of their permanent files? Can I request them with an official letter from our homeschool, just as another school would? I would like to have official copies of that information as well as their current records (that I have).
That is exactly how I would do it in Illinois, I dont know your state, but check with the state requirements for a private school transfer and go with it! I've heard that contacting the school in your district is the fastest way. State your agenda , let them know you are and the children whose records you need. It should be that simple! Good luck!
Good question. If your school is registered with your state, I don't see any reason why you could't request those files. As a matter of fact, I don't see why any PARENT couldn't request those records anytime they choose.
Sometimes looking through state rules can be tedious, are you a member of HSLDA? You could just call them or email them to ask.
I requested my son's records from the school by certified mail. 3 months later, still no records. I again requested his records by certified mail, and cc'd the superintendent of the district. I really hope I get the records this time since I really hate to get nasty! ![]()
Good luck!

Yes, although they were not complete. No nurse visits were documented, nor the reading specialist evaluation. Incompetence of the public school system is yet another reason why we homeschool.

I cannot say I disagree with you. As a special educator in the public schools I try to make sure all components are in the records that are requested. My husband is the one who homeschools our childre. We will never place them in a public school. I would be the one homeschooling them, but I have to have health insurance due to having had cancer.
