Veritas Press vs. Story of the World

I am planning next year. I have to buy a little each month and I buy used 90% of the time so I have to watch for listings.

Anyway, I am torn between the VP Task Cards and SOTW for DS, who will be 1st grade but doing second grade work, and DD who will tag along as a K'er.

Any thoughts on either of these for youngers? Other suggestions?

I think SOTW is better for the younger kids. It reads more like a story doesn't it? HOWEVER, based on the reviews on Amazon, I'd be wary of it because it says there are discrepencies in it. ...I'm not historically-savvy enough to know where the discrepencies are to be able to "correct" them when teaching. Of course, at that age, how much will they retain? I guess it depends on if that's a big deal to you or not.

I prefer SOTW because it has a more secular vibe to it (we're Catholic and could never use Veritas). SOTW is, hands down, my favorite history for grades 1-4.

If you do go with Veritas, I've heard that their self paced history (I think it's for a bit older than yours though, but check it out) is amazing. They have free trials for that.

I believe in the benefit of organized after school activities and nosy, involved parents. I believe in spoiling my children. I believe that I have seen the village and I do not want it anywhere near my children. Now for the controversial stuff: we have traditional gender roles, we're Catholic, I'm Libertarian, he's Republican, we're both conservative, and we own guns (now there's no need to ask, lol).             Aimee

All history books have discrepancies and I think she has tried to correct those in the revised edition.

I'm not disagreeing with you actually - Bramble, definitely go with the revised editions if you do go with SOTW.

we are doing story of the world and like it so far, and I have the VP time line cards if you are interesting in buying them used. I never heard of the task cards before.
