4 moms liked this

Our 4yr old wanted chickens for his birthday. He had been asking for a while and we thought he would get over it, but no. He was persistent. So my Husband and I got him 6 chickens and 1 for our oldest.

We have 3 different breeds and they are called Layer chickens. Apparently, through much breeding, layer chickens do not need a rooster to lay eggs, they only need a roster to fertilize the egg to get another chicken.

We live in city limits and also have two Dogs.

They no  longer look like this, but they were soooo cute :-)

Did you check to see if there were restrictions on having them where you live?

Yes I did. We can have up to 8.

although, I came across that by accident. I was looking on what to feed, how to keep them safe, when do they start laying eggs..ect.

People own Horses in the city limit, I was not sure the restriction on that, but I figured if they have horses (and you cant hide those) I doubt chickens would be a problem, there is that small Chance I could have been wrong but I wasn't and it worked out that I came across the info anyways.

Will you eventually use them for meat (assuming you're not vegetarian or vegan)?

We have 4 white ones. They would be the first to go (we can take them to a butcher) I wouldn't have a problem eating them.

The ones that cannot get the chop until they are just old are the 3 brown ones and the black one. (Wind, Mr. Peabody, and Richard Sherman) they have names and they boys LOVE them.

Its more so my lens vs the camera a 50mm 1.8 lens. I used my 9year old camera D200 Nikon. nothing fancy as far as cameras go.

I had chicks and rabbits growing up. Your son looks so happy in the picture.
