weaning and diaper rash

My son turned 1 last week and we are on day number 5 of not nursing.  He is doing really great.  I think I am suffering a little bit more than he is. lol.  Anyway...my concern is his diaper rash.  This is his very first diaper rash!  He has had it for about 2 days now.  It isn't too bad, just real red.  But he screams and wiggles around so much when I am trying to change his diaper.  He wouldn't even sit in the bathtub to take a bath, he had to stand the whole time :(  Is this normal when you go from nursing to cows milk?

I have twins and I have dealt with diaper rashes before, but I only nursed them for 3 months then went to formula with them.  So this is new since I actually nursed him for 12 months, along with baby food/cereal the past 6 months.

It could be the sudden change in diet. Just keep doing the baths and the diaper creams. I know it's hard with a little boy since they like to hose everything down ;) but let him run around without a diaper for a bit. And when you do get the rash under control, keep putting a barrier cream like Vaseline on him so he won't get the rash again so easily. I'm sure his body will adjust to the changes soon!

Is it where his poop is touching his skin?

If so, that's an allergy symptom, my first son would get it with certain berries and dairy products.

I've been letting him run around without a diaper on.  He went into his room with his sister's following last night and they said "Mom!  Bentley farted and peed at the same time!"  Thanks for the advice.  Do you suggest a certain diaper cream?  I've been using Desitin but one of my friends said that there was something better than Desitin but she couldn't remember the name of it.

yeah it is on his butt.  I was worried that maybe it was caused by an allergy.  Would there be other symptoms I should be watching for?  If I can't get this rash to go away over the weekend I think I will call the dr office first thing monday just to be sure.

Symtoms of allergies can vary greatly... from behavioral problems, to rashes, to congestion and even earwax.   Different bodies will react differently.

If it is an allergy causing the rash on his bum from the poop touching it, just imagine what it's doing to his intestines.

Is there any reason you need to wean so early?   If you do decide this is an allergy (best way to find out is to cut out the possible allergen and watch for improvement), you might think about continuing to nurse.   My son outgrow his dairy issues by around age 2 and I was very greatful to have milk for him that entire year and not have to worry about if he was getting all the right nutrients.

I'm weaning now since I am working so much and he acts like he doesn't like drinking the breastmilk from a sippy cup anymore....but he will drink everything else, which makes no sense to me. We have slowly been weaning and he has been drinking milk for almost 2 weeks. I've been nursing along with giving him milk up until the past 5 days we haven't done any nursing so it is just milk, water, and juice that he is drinking.  I would have thought an allergy would have appeared 2 weeks ago...could it take this long for an allergy to show?  I'm really hoping it isn't an allergy :(
