I have the Ameda Purely Yours double electric pump and it hurts so bad. I keep it at the lowest level and it still feels like it's pulling my nipple off. I dread pumping but I need to get enough milk stored to go back to work,so I do it. I've tried pumping while nursing on the other side to help get the milk out faster but It takes alot of massaging to get the milk out even after I have let down so it doesn't work well. After pumping when I feed the baby again It hurts so bad because my nipple stays very sore. Is pumping something I'll get used to? Also is it normal for it to be so difficult to get the milk out after letdown happens or am I just not patient enough? I'd like to pump both sides at once but it takes alot of massaging and warm drinks to get it out and I dont have enough hands.Any suggestions?
If I recall, I had to get my nipples used to the pulling of the pump. Even when I pumped at work the first initial start always hurt for me. I have sensitive nipples anyway....maybe that's your problem.
With the let down....maybe your letting the "pain" get the better of you. I would suggest really relaxing, especially when the letdown happens. Just really focus on relaxing.
I pumped 3 x's a day for 18 months, and nursed for 27 months.
I would make sure that the shield/flange is the right size for you. If it's too big or too small it can cause you pain.
Also, any chance that you have thrush?
I have a journal post I did on pumping that you can look at on my profile if you want, it has lots of links to info about sizes of flanges and pumping in general.
Here's the link so you don't have to go looking for it: http://www.cafemom.com/journals/read/1508776/Breast_Pumps
The flange could be the problem,I guess.I just have the ones that came with the pump.It just hurts so much like when I first started BFing. Thanks,I'll check out the link. I have no problem having letdown,it just happens at least once an hour even when my babies not around,it's just getting the milk out thats the problem.
