Every morning I bring ds (18 months) in bed and nurse him. Well, Saturday morning, he had a bad latch and it hurt! I tried a couple times to relatch him but by that time it already hurt so I couldn't really tell if he was getting a good latch. My nipple was swollen when I woke up. Then, later that day my armpit area started hurting. Idk, I think I had a clogged duct from him not latching well and then going the rest of the day without nursing (which is normal). This morning, it happened again on the same side. He didn't latch very well and I knew it. I am having a hard time telling when he IS latched well because I'm already so sore. Except now, my nipple hurts soooo bad. I keep getting shooting pains that start in my nipple and go up into my breast. Some of them almost make me gasp. What can I do?? What is wrong?? I've never had shooting pains from a bad latch.
Edit: My milk duct isn't clogged anymore. The rest of my breast feels fine, it's just my nipple and the shooting pains from my nipple to the rest of my breast.
Maybe a yeast infection in the breast? Did your son break the skin on the nipple at all? I know I had the shooting pains in my breasts after having a bad latch when my daughter was just learning to nurse and It turned out to be an infection even though really the nipple itself looked fine other then it was a little swollen. You may want to see your dr!

I thought about thrush/yeast infection. I expected Elijah to have thrush if I had it on my nipple?? There is one small area on my nipple that is kind of chapped, other than that it is fine, just swollen. The shooting pains you had were from the infection?

Nope nope nope. Thrush can be present with NO symptoms in baby. So treat it as such.
I get those pains when I'm clogged. I just massage the area to release it and then have son go at it. But damn it hurts!!!! I've never had thrush so I'm not sure there.
I love my thing one and my thing two. I believe that children who get dirty tend to be healthier. Becoming a mother has made me into the woman I have always wanted to be.

Bump for question on how to treat thrush. I know I probably should have gone to the doctor on Wednesday but I don't have a doctor. :(
Remedies on kellymom.com and on our resources forum...better than anything the doc will give you.
i had thrush when breastfeeding my son. but i had it in both breasts. the best advice i got was to extract milk from your breast, rub it on your nipple and let your breast get plenty of air. it sounds strange, but when i would do it, i would sit topless in my bedroom for 30 minutes after each feeding. it went away after a few days. it can't hurt to try

I have been doing that and it has seemed to help but since he only nurses a couple times a day, maybe I need to do it more often. I think I have a milk blister too. Oy!
